Wait it was in the mid 70's and the FBI investigated it.
More than 1500 cattle were bloodlessly mutilated in 22 states.

These mutilations have been going on for YEARS.

First time I have seen a mainstream media pick up the story.

Folks, we aren’t alone...better get used to it...just my gut feeling.

No pun intended.

and speculation ran wild about Aliens, etc

Turns out they died from a rare form of encephalitis and the genitals and tongue (and sometimes the brains) were removed by small carnivores and bacteria attacking the soft tissues and easy body entry points first.

I have cattle and livestock guard dogs, Pyrenees mix. They are awesome guarding calves goats, chickens, but they consume any dead animals on the farm to avoid attracting predators. Last year I lost my 2000 lb Angus herd bull. Healthy as could be and choked on a osage orange hedge apple. They try to chew them in the fall when they fall on the ground and occasionally get them lodged in their throat. When I found him the dogs had already eaten his nuts and tongue... A dead animal often has its mouth open and the tongue and testicles are the only accessible parts of the corpse that aren't covered in cowhide (the same tough stuff your shoes are made of.) Stop reading if you have a weak stomach because next they will go in through the anus and devour the innards. That's why the animal in the picture looks like a hollowed out shell. Who knows why the animals died, but the mutilation could have been canines, rodents... who knows what scavengers but the missing parts are not some mysterious sign of kinky alien bestiality fetishes...

so this isn't some strange event.

The only strange thing is a bunch of cattle dying at once due to a fast spreading disease that isn't noticed by the rancher until there are dozens of dead cattle around.

all I remember was the stories from Colorado in the 1970s complaining about "cow mutilation" and then the discovery (a decade later I think) about the disease that afflicted them.

lack of blood and "surgical" removal of genitals, mouthparts, eyes is totally normal.

amusing how people who have never looked at a dead animal suddenly know aliens have been mutilating cows.

Linda Moulton Howe investigated those and reported that, in typical cases, the animals were drained of blood. There usually was no blood at the scene. The edges of the wounds — typically tongues, sex organs, a/o anuses removed surgically — appeared cauterized. No footprints or signs of humans or other animals in the vicinity. In many cases, predators stayed away from the carcasses long after discovery. And, yes, there are connections to the UFO phenomenon.

Her book, An Alien Harvest, is solidly researched and documented.

The story says:
On his whiteboard, he has a running list scrawled in green marker with the top theories. What's clear: It isn't bears, wolves, cougars or poisonous plants. Nor were the animals shot.

But they don't give us his running list of top theories.

Not enough evidence to prove it was aliens. Where are the little alien footprints? Where are the landing markings? Why has no one any alien evidence?

It's never aliens.
