It is clear that ISIS is an organized crime family that only pretends to be concerned with religious matters. What does ISIS do to promote Allah and Islam? Nothing. Instead they kidnap, blackmail, rape, sex traffic, steal and sell antiquities.
Putin and the current Russian leaders are in bed with the Russian mob. So, what if turning Turkey loose on the Kurds is a backhand way of liberating Russian mob associates in Syria aka ISIS ?Maybe the money made by ISIS is all being funneled into Putin's gazillion dollar secret bank account.

(11,949 posts)Inoculated from the time of their birth to believe the most misogynistic, homophobic, anti-democratic shit you can imagine.
When they are cutting off peoples heads they truly believe the are doing gods work.
History is full of folks like this. From all religions.
Why do you doubt their claims?
When someone tells you what they are, you really should believe them.
Now, have various powers tried to use them to their advantage? No doubt. The Turks and Saudis come to mind. And since a large percentage of Saudis actually agree with their theology that is where I look.
Because the Saudis regularly cut off peoples heads. In public. Gods will and all.

(33,643 posts)Look up Mohammed Atta sometime if you don't recall what was discovered about him post 9/11. He was a nightclub denizen, a womanizer, and a drinker who liked his fancy clothes.
I'd guess rank and file Isis are probably more or less 'what we think they are', but their 'leadership'? Feel like we don't really know shit about THEM ... They could be 'anybody', frankly.

(25,132 posts)It started due to the loss of Saddam Hussein, the flipflopped power structure in Iraq from Sunni to Shia, and power vacuum left by us.
I'm probably the only person on DU that wasn't crazy about Obama's exit strategy in Iraq. I did not support the Iraq War going in, but Iraq was left in fragments from that war. Bush did not enter the Iraq War with an exit strategy. Iraq did not have a well functioning government when we left at the end of 2011. I know the options going out were not very good for us.
