ELLETTSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - A Black Hawk helicopter landed in one woman's backyard. Nikki Schultz explains it like it was a scene from a movie.
She was home alone in Ellettsville, when a Black Hawk helicopter landed on her property. She says what scared her most is when she saw men in fatigues climb out and were holding guns.

The National Guard says they were on a mission searching for marijuana plants. They found 60 plants in the woods right behind her property.

(31,513 posts)I'd be willing to bet that deploying the chopper and personnel cost a lot more than the street value of those mj plants.

(23,864 posts)This was in the early 80's, in Chalmette. I was at an all-boy's middle school and we were playing on the football field (which doubled as a big open area to play during recess). And just out of the blue these helicopters started descending on the field and we naturally all ran back to the main school building. It was funny because one moment you could hear helicopters in the distance and then all of a sudden there was a terrific racket from the rotors. It's the kind of thing you naturally want to run away from. One by one they touched down, lots of soldiers with helmets got out, milled around and then after about 20 minutes or so, they all took off. I don't think they had weapons though. Everyone was really weirded out, not even the teachers would walk up to the helicopters to find out what was going on.
We just all stood there, gawking, wondering. Even at a distance of about 100 yards, the helicopters were quite loud. Like I said, one by one, they took off and then disappeared into the distance.
Nobody ever mentioned it again. I never found out why they landed there or why they landed without warning on a football field with a couple of hundred little boys running around. AFAIK, nobody at the school ever found out. I always assumed they thought they were flying somewhere when one of them encountered a mechanical issue and had to land in a hurry and then they fixed it or whatever. The helicopters were large like blackhawks but I can't say for certain if they were. But they looked like them and they were big enough to hold at least 10-ish soldiers each.
That poor lady must have been shitting bricks.

(13,905 posts)I remember one year in the '80s when CAMP used big ol' Vietnam style Hueys in Humboldt County eradication efforts. That was fucked up. The local bush vets were freaking out. Those things are way louder and bigger than what we were used to seeing at that time. Thought we were in 'Apocalypse Now' for awhile there.
Using Blackhawks is even worse. They are trying to scare the crap out of everyone.

(299 posts)I think you have to see the positives in this. The National Guard also get to brush up on their training and stay sharp. Landing in people's gardens might keep the skill level high just incase something really nasty comes up.

(76 posts)my guess is that the Indiana National Guard finally upgraded. Back in '88 I watched a Huey circle around my neighborhood and one about a half mile away. I wasn't sure what was going on as it would fly large circles, smaller circles, hover, and sometimes fly slowly backwards. When it landed, a friend and I drove over towards the area. It had landed across the street from a friend of my family's house so we stopped in and watched. The lady whose house it landed at was an author from South Africa. Turned out she had over 100 plants drying in her barn and another 200 out in the woods behind her house.
Ellettsville is about 20 miles or so from where I live and evidently she has seen the news reports about the Indiana State Police searching for pot ( it's been on the news a lot lately). It's supposed easier to spot marijuana now since it's nice and green while most other plants are brown or less green due to the drought.
Also, calling her or letting her know ahead of time would be pretty fucking stupid, especially if they are not sure if she's the owner of the pot.
