3. It's prostate, not prostrate.

Just a little nit I have to pick. Prostrate means lying stretched out, face down, which isn't how they probably do prostate surgery on that little gland among your man-parts.

15. I did PR for a community hospital for many years

We'd have a free prostate cancer screening every year. Used to drive me crazy when people would call to make an appointment for the "prostrate" screening. Also, and I'm not making this up, every year women would call to make an appointment for themselves. We would have to explain to them that women don't have that part.

25. *Is* he Type 1? - I realize that you are one of the best reporting/factual DUers, but

Last edited Mon Oct 14, 2019, 09:26 PM - Edit history (1)

Tweety is one of my pet peeves (not wishing him ill), and therefore have monitored him for a couple of decades, and know that several years ago he was first diagnosed via a hospitalization with the glucose at 300+.

And back then some empathetic posters were all charitably upset like it was a death verdict. I remember posting that many millions of us have diabetes and either *manage* it with testing & whatever, but that sympathy for Tweety is not a zero-to-120 issue.

******Now. On to prostate cancer. (I've also had/have that.) Yip, when the diagnosis is burst on you, it is a black-out horrendous event. I'm no expert on any of these things, just how I was impacted at the time. So, getting a cancer diagnosis is a *SHOCK*. Then things happen. Choices. Radiation or chemo or surgery. Then we learn that our medical professionals see this every damned day. So, really, all the choices are pretty much already clearly MADE. So for my (and I guess everybody's?) prostate cancer, the first thing I was told was that I would be sent to a surgeon/urologist to lay it all out. On first sight he said I was not a candidate for surgery because of my weight, that (no choice) I was headed to radiation. Fine. They didn't explain whatever. Now, going on 6 years later my family doctor told me that radiation is the same final effect as surgery. Basically, the prostate is burned out vs being cut out. Fine.

Let's see, John KERRY has had whatever choice for his prostate cancer. Just today, even after seeing Elton JOHN's "Rocketman" movie, which supposedly was his autobio pic, he said on a talk show spot that he had prostate cancer and went the surgery route, with the other detail that he didn't care about the end-of-sex because he "had plenty of sex" (in his life) so doesn't need any more. Fine. (I didn't know that.)

That's another thing one learns, that the doctors don't really tell you stuff as stuff is happening (although they later say they did). And our our medical professionals are severely over-burdened. And when you go to the reception areas to get your treatment, the room is *BURSTING* with patients SO what makes YOU special? And many many others have far more severe conditions and past treatments than I had. So, HERE'S THE THING: i couldn't even feel sorry for myself. Many are worse off.

As for Tweety (and Elton JOHN?), well, they have the *TOTAL MAX, GOLD CARD, PREMIUM HEALTH INSURANCE*. i'm not saying they don't deserve stuff, just that they will be as all right as all right can be, no matter what the outcome.

Am I saying something class-envious here? My opinion is "no".

**********QUOTE*******

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/type-1-diabetes/symptoms-causes/syc-20353011
Type 1 diabetes, once known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is a chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin. Insulin is a hormone needed to allow sugar (glucose) to enter cells to produce energy.

Different factors, including genetics and some viruses, may contribute to type 1 diabetes. Although type 1 diabetes usually appears during childhood or adolescence, it can develop in adults.

Despite active research, type 1 diabetes has no cure. Treatment focuses on managing blood sugar levels with insulin, diet and lifestyle to prevent complications.

32. He had malaria a few years back and stated it was complicated by his diabetes.

A guest with him interjected "childhood? and he nodded. So, while I am very fully aware of the differences in Type 1 and 2 diabetes, since there was no follow-up and nothing has been written in any interviews I've seen, I took that at face value. Now, if you have seen something documenting that he was first diagnosed a few years ago while hospitalized, that clearly suggests nonjuvenile diabetes, though he still may be insulin-dependant. As you know, tweety doesn't listen to his guests so the fact he nodded but did not correct might well be nothing more than he wasn't really listening.

So, based on what you have seen reported, I'd guess he is suffering not from juvenile diabetes (and thus not type I), although it remains possible he is insulin-dependant if other alternative meds have not conferred good control as can occur in Type II as well.

34. "documenting that he was first diagnosed a few years ago" - all I know is t.v. at the time

That's what I saw and heard on his show, on MSNBC, back when (several years ago as I said) he was diagnosed and absent from the show, that he didn't know he was diabetic, had (whatever physical event to hospitalization with 300+ glucose).

As a non-medical/non-professional, I say this would make it Type 2, especially since he lived all his life schmoozing cocktails without a clue until it reached its climax/crisis point.

No, I don't have documentation. I'm pretty reliable in reporting/parroting what I see and hear on t.v.

My real point is the "sympathy" vs empathy that some of our beautiful DUers react with for Dear Tweety. As I said, he irks me, has been called here by other DUers as a "weathervane" and "When he's on our side there's nobody better." Our politics aside, his health is like any other human being's.

*******ON EDIT: I have ZERO idea whether having malaria is a factor between Types 1 & 2 diabetes. But, haha, malaria would be a plus for Tweety in his self-resume to make him "heroic". Like when he said that in the Peace Corps in Africa, "I walked the same ground as CHURCHILL" or when the Capitol policemen were shot in 199? he suddenly discovered he had worked as a Capitol Policemen (3 months, rent-a-cop).

Oh, and he said, years ago, that he ONLY joined the Peace Corps JUST to avoid going to Vietnam (not because of idealism), and that his family were "cloth coat Republicans," and that his only connection to JFK was "pride of Irish Catholicism" (not idealism, ideology), and a couple of his siblings are practicing Repukes. And I *do* have documentation (my much re-posted profile here) of this stuff. Just what I've seen and heard.

63. "and a couple of his siblings are practicing Repukes."

His brother Jim used to be one of 3 Montgomery County, PA County Commissioners (as a Republican and chair of the Commissioners in a county that rims Philly), during the time when that county was more red (Commissioner breakdown was 2 Rs + 1 D). It's now solidly purple and going blue where Democrats now control the Commissioners 2 (D) - 1 (R).

65. Thanks for that. Wow, the facial resemblance but more craggy!1.

I don't have an animus towards Tweety, certainly wish as well for him as for anybody's health, just want a non-sentimentalized perspective on his health compared to the millions of people with the same things and considering he has the best insurance and care there is.

including from me.

However no matter - he is who he is and whether it's him or anyone else having to deal with prostate problems (and I remember reading somewhere that it was almost inevitable that most men will eventually contract some form of it), the hope is that it is not an aggressive form of that cancer that has taken down far too many (including one of my favorite actors - Bill Bixby).

will be able to clarify whether the insulin Rubicon changes things over to Type 1. 'course, we don't know whether Tweety is insulin dependent.

45. Type I is always insulin dependant; Type II CAN be insulin -dependant, though more often not.

(frequently can be controlled with a variety of other newer drugs as well as diet and weight loss).

If you read my previous post I agreed with you that it is Type II, given it was diagnosed at the time of his malaria hospitalization.

Oh, and just for completeness sakes, Type I is ALWAYS insulin-dependant until such time of a successful pancreatic transplant, though they are not an option for most.

I hope his taint gets better and soon, AND that his prostate surgery went well!

68. I truly believe that the colonoscopy is one of the top health check procedures in my memory.

It is done professionally and some problems that could kill people can be fixed on the spot. The Gastrointerologist who did my last exam pointed out that polyps that get removed during exams would likely become cancerous if left in place. He also said that the size of a polyp is an indication of it's threat to a person's health.

Maybe people here that are or were Doctors can weigh in, but it may be that the level of a PSA test result can be indicative of the direction of a person's prostate health, maybe a "good" but higher number indicates that the patient need to be retested within a few months or go for an internal exam. At any rate, I am just so happy about stuff that can be found early enough now to save people's lives.

62. I'm A-OK after a 2001 prostate cancer treatment; I hope Tweety has a complete and lasting recovery.

Treated for prostate cancer myself back in 2001. It wasnít a stroll through the park, and yet here I am, 18 years later.

Hope Tweety bounces back soon!
