By Geoff Mulvihill / Associated Press
The opioid crisis cost the U.S. economy $631 billion from 2015 through last year and it may keep getting more expensive, according to a study released Tuesday by the Society of Actuaries.
The biggest driver of the cost over the four-year period is unrealized lifetime earnings of those who died from the drugs, followed by health care costs.
While more than 2,000 state and local governments have sued the drug industry over the crisis, the report released Tuesday finds that governments bear less than one-third of the financial costs. The rest of it affects individuals and the private sector.
The federal government is tracking how many lives are lost to the opioid crisis (more than 400,000 Americans since 2000), but pinning down the financial cost is less certain.

(868 posts)we should take the total of lives lost and then the local, state and Federal costs separately.
Then, determine all Pharma companies involved for a total of criminals involved.
Total Lives lost = y*
Total Profits (of the criminals) = $$
List criminals in order of contribution of damage by percentage =
Total costs = x
Total of criminals = z
Then do the math.
At the end of which, each and every criminal (corporate and personally) involved will be charged a
fixed penalty according to their criminality which is not to be reduced by the courts for any
reason including bankruptcy.
It matters not whether the criminals and their families are left destitute as the decisions made which
resulted in their plight were made freely and unapologetically without regard to any harm, injury,
death or financial burden placed upon the tax payer. To do less only encourages further violations when
greed overcomes their Civic Duty to work for the betterment of this nation and its citizens.
You broke it, you fix it. Keep your private home and one car to get you to your job. The rest, college
funds, savings accounts, hidden Swiss accounts, stocks, options, gold, property, etc., etc.. are as forfeit
as the lives they stole.
The days that fines and penalties for crimes against America are reduced from restitution, punitive damages,
fines and potential bankruptcy must end so that corporations and criminals pay the exact same cost that
the average citizen is forced to pay.
Besides the money to pay their share, the those that made the decision to put Profit above life and Civic
Duty they should be given life sentences for murder.
y* = cost of lives lost to be determined prior to factoring into the equation.
