Does Trump Realize the Trouble He’s In?
October 17, 2019 at 7:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

Jonathan Chait: “Every once in a while, some event offers a clarifying reminder of the president’s poor judgment. On Wednesday, it was the release of a letter Trump wrote to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The letter itself was an embarrassment…”

“But what really underlined Trump’s problem for me wasn’t that he wrote an incompetent letter to follow up on what seems to have been an incompetent phone call. Or that his Syria policy has resulted in chaos and death. Or that, on a crass political level, he’s managed to alienate his congressional allies just as he needs them most, with House Republicans voting overwhelmingly on Wednesday to condemn his decision.”

“No, what really got to me was that Trump distributed copies of this letter to congressional leaders when they showed up at the White House for a briefing. Think of it. Even if the letter had been perfectly normal, what Trump was handing them was an Oct. 9 request to Erdogan to halt his invasion — a request that Erdogan has, as we’ve seen, totally ignored. Trump was bragging about what he considered to be a sign of his own brilliance without realizing that it was instead evidence of abject failure.”

he has lied, bribed, and cheated his way to the top .... He knows no other way to do business. It does make you wonder if he just thinks doing more of the same will continue to make everything go away. He's never been held accountable before, so in his eyes, it works. He will live to regret the day he decided to come down that escalator.

The release of the letter - easily one of the most bizarre and ineffectual official communiques between world leaders ever - coupled with the release of the meeting picture in which the Speaker is clearly eating Trump's lunch, displays a stunning lack of self-awareness on Trump's part. In fact, the judgement to release both signals that the POTUS is not well, emotionally. We're talking 25th amendment stuff...

when a narcissist is being impeached. He can't take people saying bad things about him and impeachment is a whole lot of people saying bad things about him. Trump needs his fluffers to survive. Trump will come unglued even more when impeachment hearings start, if he makes it that far.

hopefully, we can toss Trump into the dumpster soon.

"strength" and "effectiveness" of the letter. I kept having to point out that the letter had been sent, received and ignored before the invasion. How can you ever get through to these imbeciles!?

The players at the top are stonewalling without consequences. Moscow Mitch and the Senate will not convict. So, what do you see happening that will entail real “trouble” for Agent Orange? He looks crazier every day, but his minions are prepared to follow him off the cliff. He’s got a lot of time left to create more destruction, destruction which already will take a decade to fully recover from. We may never put right some of his blight.

When you have an idiot who is totally incompetent in one of the most important positions in the world it's one thing, but when that idiot thinks they're actually really smart it's a level of danger several times above what it could be.

There is nothing as dangerous as someone who thinks they're smart when they aren't.

And the fact his aids let him make copies of this hilariously dictated letter tells me he now has no one around him to check him. I have no idea how that letter played on FOX News, I suspect the downplayed it or ignored it.

He's so embarrassing it's painful. Can you imagine this lout in high level talks with world leaders? They have to be laughing their asses off afterward.

Case in point - his trying to arrange a surprise "hug session" between the grieving British parents and the driver who killed their son. I mean who does shit like that and who thought it was a good idea? Ivanka?
