Really CNN? "Biden denied communion"

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Omaha Steve (a host of the General Discussion forum).

This has been a headline on their page for the last couple of days. The headline is written in a way to imply it's something "bad" and unusual versus something that has happened to many Democratic presidential and vice-presidential candidates in the past. And it's not about Joe Biden as a person, it's due to his support for abortion rights. Of course, that is left out of the headline as well. Towards the end of the article is this sentence:

"Catholic Democratic presidential and vice-presidential candidates have been denied communion over their support for abortion rights several times in recent decades -- at times exposing deep cultural rifts between conservative and moderate Catholics in the church's hierarchy."

This thing has been up for two days now, it's not breaking news and I couldn't care less.

One of the reasons we couldn’t count on Pennsylvania going blue for a long time was the politicians and union guys would not leave the alter for Sunday activities only. As I remember the trick is to do confession just before you do communion. Correct me, please, we must be diverse and all.

So what if one right-wing priest decides to make a political statement by denying him communion. I doubt even the Vatican would endorse this.

With all three, they and the Pope are all smiles. For Catholics, Biden and Kerry, it was clearly a big deal.

I think the Vatican should discipline that priest for that. Furthermore, he does not know what Joe may have confessed or not confessed to another priest, so it is not in his place to sit in judgement on him by denying him communion.

I grew up Catholic. Priest do not make the determination of who receives Communion. This is strictly between the person and God.
