Kevin McCarthy is implicated in the scandal he doesn't want investigated
https://www.emptywheel.net/2019/10/31/the-republican-closing-argument-against-impeachment-is-personally-implicated-in-the-scandal/
... But perhaps the most telling aspect of the debate is that the Republican closing argument — yet another recital of that same Hamilton quote — came from Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy. Kevin McCarthy is implicated in the scandal he doesn’t want investigated. McCarthy received money both personally and in the guise of his Protect the House PAC from Igor Fruman and Lev Parnas, the grifters at the core of the influence operation that led to Trump’s quid pro quo conversation with Volodymyr Zelensky. He also keynoted an event with the grifters. While he has said he’d donate the money to charity (though has not yet, as far as I know, shown that he did that), there is no way to unring the bell of their support. He became Majority Leader with the support of men who have since been indicted for that support. That is the face that is leading opposition to impeachment. ...

1. All roads lead to Putin. On it are his puppets...
The Guardian:
In an exchange first reported by the Washington Post, McCarthy said: “There’s …there’s two people, I think, Putin pays: [California Representative Dana] Rohrabacher and Trump … [laughter] … swear to God.” According to the transcript, speaker Paul Ryan immediately responded: “This is an off-the-record … [laughter] … NO LEAKS … [laughter] … alright?!” Source: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/may/17/putin-pays-donald-trump-kevin-mccarthy-recording |

2. I thought Kevin McCarthy is the MINORITY leader
I remember when we won the HOUSE, that Kevin was having a SAD because he didn't want to be referred as "The MINORITY leader. Did all the news media decide to let poor little Kevin have his way? I've seen him referred to the Majority leader a lot. I checked the wiki: A member of the Republican Party, he is the House Minority Leader, having previously served as House Majority Leader from August 2014 to January 2019. |

The blog is accurate in saying that he became Majority Leader with support from Parnas and Fruman, but the first reference to him should say "House Minority Leader."

3. McCarthy knew "Putin pays Trump"
https://www.washingtonpost.com/apps/g/page/national/read-the-transcript-of-the-conversation-among-gop-leaders-obtained-by-the-post/2209/
So this is more sinister than him just giving the money back. Because already he knew Russian money was being given to members of his party ... and in reaction to that: he put his hand out. He should be kicked out of Congress. |

42. Always thought his overheard "slip" was intentional to protect their whole Party,
By that date, Russia had massive hooks in the GOP through direct donations, Pac donations , "social welfare" tax free donations/money laundering 501C3s (eg. RW Churches, the whole Koch Pravda network, the NRA) as well as to
McConnell and Ryan for direct distribution. Easier to finger only the two already under scrutiny and contain the damage that let the public pursue the question of how long and how much has Putin been "paying" so many of them. Including Ryan, McCarthy, McConnell. |

8. I think once the facts get revealed (and I expect that shortly they will be public knowledge)
members of Congress who received some of Putin’s cash will be squirming and twisting in the wind. No one wants to admit they had anything to do with that money and they’ve dug themselves deeper and deeper trying to keep the ugly secret. And they’ve stuck by tRump for the same reason. It will be fun to watch the truth come out and see the excuses and flailing by the likes of McCarthy. Never a dull moment.....at last we’ll have TV worth seeing! Bring on the public testimony! |

I think no one here is even mildly surprised.
That phrase, “donate the money to charity”, always pisses me off when politicians are caught accepting illegal contributions. Can’t my buddy set up a nonprofit PAC to re-elect me and then I donate the illegal contributions to that. In other words to myself. |

the world do these republican scumbags need money from Russian thugs? I suspect that something else was going on, such as the Russians in conjunction w/ taking control (or at the behest) of rump, also coordinated efforts to suck in the easy republican targets once rump won the primaries etc., with promises of easy cash (w/o the efforts to entice voters to donate to their campaigns).
No wonder these scumbags are going against Country. And McCarthy received the money personally? I wonder if he even declared the money as income? I bet not. I hope that the IRS nails his a&& for tax fraud then (or at a minimum, he's taken on by a democratic candidate who'll nail his a&&). |
