FBI agents say C.G. accepted the ride, but Weylin Rodriguez didn't take her to her house. Instead, he headed to Orlando with big plans for the girl: He was going to force her to become a prostitute.

Authorities say that like C.G., teenage girls across the country are forced into the sex industry. Sometimes, they end up in Central Florida because of the area's conventions and special events, which make it a lucrative region.

There, one of Rodriguez's prostitutes and enforcers Pria Gunn slid furniture against the motel-room door so the girls couldn't leave, agents say. Rodriguez pulled phone cables out of the walls. C.G. wasn't even allowed to go to the bathroom by herself.

"They lure these girls in. They will shower them with gifts. They will dine them. They will build up a trusting relationship," said Sue Aboul-Hosn, a missing-child and human-trafficking specialist with DCF. "Then they turn. Then, it's payback time."

(110,159 posts)there are a lot of dysfunctional homes with children that are easy prey. that is not the only way they get the kids, but that is a big one.
why do we ignore this.
they use the ads in papers, internet, set up sex on line.... sell them on the streets and throw them into strip clubs, all for our entertainment.
until we the people say enough, that this is not acceptable, the cops will always be behind. and it is just reality is not ok. we have become desentized and the every increasing of dehumanizing people will allow people to feed off our young for there enjoyment.

(36,827 posts)Would that not be the honest approach rather than resorting to baseless and petty character assassinations as you usually do when you can't support your assertions? Just a thought.
Please pardon me if I'm a bit skeptical of rad-fem "theory" of cause and effect. Plenty of folks were fooled once by Dworkin and all her palls who used rad-fem "theory" to claim internet porn would cause rape to increase exponentially, only to find out the exact opposite happened. Whether you realize it or not, those efforts were extremely counterproductive. Kinda sounds a lot like continuing to look the other way, no?

(36,827 posts)... reports that the incident rate of rape and sexual assault in 1992 was 1.8 per 100,000. In 2009 they reported 0.5. You can do the math.

(110,159 posts)this poster is aware of the facts, but, he can dismiss any concer a person has with this issue by simply stating, rape is decreasing, all is well. that is not the facts. and he consistently ignores even though i have given him the info in the past. hence, why i no longer bother addressing the issue with him, and others on this thread.
An FBI staffer admitted the definition is very narrow but reasoned that eventually, a National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) with a more accurate definition of rape will be the preferred tracking system over the UCR. However, only 28 percent of the country uses NIBRS so far and there is not a foreseeable date for a complete switch. Philadelphia does not use this system.
The hierarchy rule is another way rapes are downgraded in national statistics. The rule dictates that except in cases of robbery and arson, only the most severe crime against an individual counts. The worst crime is, of course, murder. That means for example, Sabina Rose ODonnell, the popular PYT hostess who was raped and strangled to death last summer near Girard Avenue, doesnt count. Neither does Elaine Goldberg, Nicole Piacentini and Casey Mahoney, all raped and murdered by the Kensington Strangler.
There is no question that sexual stereotypes and bias are a root cause of police mishandling of sex crimes, testified Tracy. Less visible but no less responsible is the manner in which the FBIs UCR system defines, analyzes and publicizes the incidence of sex crimes.
http://www.philadelphiaweekly.com/news-and-opinion/cover-story/Number-of-Rape-Victims-Reported-Dont-Reflect-Reality.html
· The FBIs 2007 Uniform Crime Report listed 91,874 forcible rapes, but some estimates suggest the actual number may be 24 times higher.
· Police departments go to great lengths to look good on the UCR, the FBIs comprehensive national crime report by which all U.S. police departments are judged, and federal funding is determined. Often this means interpreting forcible rape even more narrowly than the FBI does when classifying sexual crimes.
· Police departments across the country, notably Baltimore and Philadelphia, have been found to be juking the statscoding legitimate rape cases as unfounded in order to make it appear that rape numbers have declined.

(6,801 posts)fine, I'm there with you.
If you're going to say that even one case is too many I totally agree.
The problem here is that some people make false claims (like that this is growing by leaps and bounds) in an attempt to attack an old nemesis (in this case the internet apparently) without first proving that claim or providing any sort of causal link between the two.
They will also falsely lump this in with other things that perhaps they find abhorrent (aka porn) in an attempt to push their agenda using guilt by association.
There is no excuse or justification for this crime. Those who committed it should never see the light of day. That doesn't mean it's ok to make up statistics about it or to conflate this crime with a bunch of other legal activities that perhaps some find unsavory.

(15,652 posts)is the change in terminology - sex trafficking, sexual slavery, forced prostitution . The stories and methods for recruitment are the same as they ever were. If anything, the Internet exposes us to more of these stories and perhaps provides more ways to sexually exploit people.
I for one and glad to see the terms change. They seem to reflect that not all sex workers are participating by choice.

You'll need to provide evidence that human sex trafficking is "growing in leaps and bounds" before you can blame it all on the internet.
You have a conclusion lined up but your premise hasn't even been established yet.

I guess that's why child sex predators are seen as just regular joes, in no way are they condemned and ostracized by the general public. You know, since we aren't saying this is unacceptable and all.

(23,272 posts)into the sex trade life with abuse and drugs. Its also interesting to note that this story also involves girls being forced into porn (which so many DUers insist doesn't happen... )
Once they're hooked and/or well into the lifestyle it becomes almost impossible for them to get out - they're too ashamed, stoned or dead.
Sounds like CG, the girl in the story was one of the lucky ones who got out but its crucial to note she wasn't a runaway - she was simply a dumb girl at the mall who was charmed by Weylin Rodriguez. It enough to terrify any parent (especially this parent).
K&R for a story that needs telling over and over and over....

(110,159 posts)since reading about this the last couple months, i gotta ask, what does one say to themselves when they are clueless, if they are jacking off to someone held against their will, or unwilling. looking a couple hundred years ago, we ask, how they could allow slavery. we have our very own today. and people are ambilivalent, especially when it comes to their own wants. we allow slavery cause our wants are more important than another persons needs.
it "harms" no one, my ass.
and all these people clicking on the girls and boys encourage more and more criminals to provide more services.... that would be enslaving more and more boys and girls.

(12,606 posts)A believe that a there was an attempted child abduction (girl) in the Boston area while the father was a few feet away with his back turned. He turns around to see a man rushing in to grab his young daughter. A chase ensued by he father after the perp (without girl), and eventually the perp is caught by police.
Who knows what would happen to this girl if the father's attention had been elsewhere for a half minute more?
That's my fear.
I know that there are sex offenders in my area.
Having a child puts things into perspective.

(5 posts)....it's the ones who haven't been caught yet that scare me.
I have a 13-year-old daughter who (in my opinion) looks 13. Twice in the last month -- when she has been with me (her Mom) -- she has been hit on by adult men!!! One guy offered to buy her a beer (we were in a bar in Green Bay picking up a pizza). When I told him she was 13, he said, "oh...I thought she was more like 16." 16!!! That's still a MINOR, you POS. What is the matter with these men -- that they are willing to risk their families, careers, & freedom just to get into the pants of a CHILD?? If they're caught ONCE, they should be castrated. It's not possible to rehabilitate perverts.

(6,801 posts)you try to equate them with legal and consenting porn workers? That's messed up.
Of course people "look the other way" if you're confusing the two things.
In no way should consenting adults agreeing to be filmed having sex for others be confused with 8 year olds being forced in to having sex against their will.
Don't make such comparisons. They are disturbing and do a great injustice to actual victims.

(6,801 posts)Because when it's a legal job operating openly and there are plenty of people who will do the work for a small fee there is no need to enslave people perhaps?
Child-anything sex related is illegal. Prostitution is illegal. So of course people who seek out child prostitutes are going to be engaging the services of someone who is there against their will. Obviously.
Legal porn produced by a company that stands to lose everything they own if they force underage girls to perform against their will and have hundreds of thousands of willing and legal women to choose from instead? Why would they enslave girls for no benefit and a huge risk?
But what proof would it take to convince you that most people working in porn in the US are doing so voluntarily and are of legal age?

(46,698 posts)When someone is hauled away against their will for the sex trade, shouldn't the fact that they were kidnapped be mentioned? It somehow drives the point home better how barbaric this crime is.

(22,271 posts)If there were no DEMAND there wouldn't be any of this. And all too often it's the "nice guy" down the street who goes to church every Sunday, has 2.4 children, golf every Saturday and is a fine, upstanding citizen. That's what the outside world sees. I worked with parolees for 3 years. Many had been brought into the sex/drug trade when they were very young. I heard stories that some had even been "sold off" by their parents.
There seems to always be someone ready, willing and all-too-eager to exploit children. I don't believe in the death penalty but in my fantasy world, each and everyone of them is drawn and quartered.

(23,272 posts)for talking about your direct experience with women (" I worked with parolees for 3 years. Many had been brought into the sex/drug trade when they were very young. I thank you however, from the bottom of my heart. Doing that work is deeply soul-wrenching.

(6,801 posts)Some do. These obviously do not.
Just like some people work as farmers out of choice and some were/are slaves.
It's not the work that is immoral. It's being forced in to it that's a problem.

(11,411 posts)The man who helped CG was decent that he recognized that she was underage and unhappy about being a prostitute. It isn't clear whether he used prostitutes or not. Whether or not men use prostitutes or not, how can't more of them realize something is wrong. If even 1 out of 4 of them would be willing to call the police or get the girl somewhere safe instead of using her, the traffickers would be out of business. Maybe they don't realize that a 16 or 17 year old isn't of age, but if the girl is 10 or 12, how can they not?
LadyHawkAZ
(6,199 posts)but I know there are states in which minors can be charged and convicted as adults under the prostitution laws. That can make a potent threat- if you talk, you'll go to prison (fill in horror stories about prison here). The same applies to customers- they have the same threat of arrest and jail time if they report. Yes, there are ways to report anonymously, but by that time the girl will have gone and I doubt the customers know where they're based. A report like that, with no obvious victim, no location and no available witness will get filed and forgotten.
The type of person who will hire a ten year old for sex already know they're ten years old, are doing it because they want a ten year old and aren't going to report at all.
There was a big deal made two weeks back about the Tampa PD chasing down prostitutes ahead of the RNC- adult women, untrafficked- wasting the resources that ought to be focused on kids like these and effectively ensuring that the adult women they are jailing have no other options but to stay in the business. It's a huge, ugly whirlpool that only goes downward. Don't expect it to get better anytime soon.

(20,582 posts)I read a while ago, the UN believed there were something like 2.5 million victims of human trafficking around the world. When you see stories like this, and how easy it seems to be to lure in or kidnap these children and women in developed countries, I wonder if it isn't more.
