Republican PAC unveils marriage attack ad

Republican PAC unveils marriage attack ad

By Steve Benen

Republicans were quite careful about downplaying the culture war during their national convention last week, but away from the spotlight, the hot-button social issues clearly haven't gone away.

The Campaign for American Values, created in large part by failed Republican presidential candidate Gary Bauer, is airing this ad in North Carolina.

For those who can't watch clips online, the ad features an anguished woman saying, "Obama is trying to force gay marriage on this country. That's not the change I voted for." A man hears this and agrees, "That's not the change I voted for either."

To remedy the problem, the couple agrees to vote for "someone with values," at which point "Vote Romney/Ryan" appears on screen.

1. I saw that and thought is was a parody of how STUPID it is for a straight couple

to lament gays being able to get married.

If you are a straight couple like the one shown, and gay marriage is a threat to your marriage, one of you is gay and fighting against it.

Uh yeah, I seriously doubt that this Leave it Beaver suburban couple actually voted for Obama last time around.

Non-Obama voters don't get to decide what change means.

That is the theme of many Republican ads - claiming disappointment of Obama voters from last time. And we can guess where they got that idea.

6. Force gay marriage? Where are the people they're "forcing" to marry?

Why is it that some people see heterosexual marriage as a stabilizing influence on society, while gay marriage is a sure sign of the End Times?

14. I don't think that most people are as "afraid" of same-sex marriage as they might have been

even 4 years ago. President Obama "coming out" for same-sex marriage and the Democratic Party endorsing full marriage equality seems to have done something to shift the momentum towards increased acceptance. It's going to take awhile to remove all of those odious state constitutional amendments from a lot of states but I'm convinced that it will happen eventually. Republicans are standing on the wrong side of history- yet again.

who gets "married" anyway? In fact what the heck is marriage these days, and why do we even have it? Maybe it's an archaic idea that needs to be put to rest. Just have a legal way of declaring you are partners in life or something. It's not like any of it is permanent or anything. I mean, you can change wives, husbands, or partners as often as you want. Sex when you're not married isn't illegal, sex outside a marriage when you are married is not illegal. You can combine financial resources with anyone you want, any time you want. For that matter why is polygamy illegal? Why can't a man or woman have as many "partners in life" as they want? Just do away with any tax advantages/disadvantages, and/or visitation rights and most of it becomes irrelevant.

Portraying your typical American family as holding the same hate-filled ideas as they do.

And since when is lifting a ban on someone's rights considered "forcing", when it doesn't affect anyone else?
