(4,835 posts)...and I'd like for someone to fact check me.
First of all; I've been looking over some government statistics because I keep hearing folks whine about 'deficit spending' on Facebook. There is a Bush photo that highlights the accomplishments of the Bush administration and (of course it's bullshit) but I can see how it may seem favorable to members of the GOAT party.
However, for some reason the 2007 federal budget increased at a smaller percentage (less than 3%) than all of the previous budgets (under Bush), and then the 2009 budget increased at a ridiculous percentage (about 18%).
Now I'd heard before that the recession actually occurred in 2007. I believe the definition of recession is two consecutive quarters with a reduction in GDP. This would indicate that GDP is tied very closely to federal spending and the recession was set up a year before the economic meltdown by a reduction (in the increase) of federal spending.
I am accusing the republicans of gaming the system. Once the economy slowed down; it was inevitable that the housing market would crash. Spending also was absolutely bat shit crazy for Obama's first budget (even though it was Bush's final approved budget).
If the spending had been even across the years 2006 to 2009; there may have been a correction in the real estate market instead of a bubble.
I'll have to put up a graph, but the whole thing seems kind of strange.

(4,835 posts)I made the graph below. You will notice that had federal government outlays increased at a 'predictable' rate (7.4%); the actual amount that outlays would have increased in 2009 wouldn't have needed to be as much (both lines total up to the same amount of total outlays).
The republicans lost control of the house and senate in 2007, so it was their budget, signed by their president. That gave us that small increase in Federal Government Outlays in 2007 that contributed to the recession.

Additionally, notice that the amount of GDP decline in the 'Late 2000's recession' is 5.1%. Which, interestingly, is the difference between the amount that Federal Government Outlays actually increased and the average amount of increase from the years 2001 to 2009. I realize that this is an over-simplification, but interesting just the same.

I think that if a person wanted to make the case that reducing government spending plays a role in feeding recessions this is an example one could point to.
I'll have to look at the previous recessions, but you will notice that all recessions since Kennedy; occured during Republican administrations. Kennedy lowered taxes on the wealthy. Oddly the article above doesn't mention lowering taxes at all. Which, to me, is odd because if you lower taxes on successful entrepreneurs; they might not spend as much on the business since they won't have to pay as much taxes on their profit. That alone is bound to cause at least a small economic slow down.

...I can't afford it. I'm unemployed and trying to save my house. All my savings are gone.
Oh, and comments like yours, over the years, is why I think some so-called progressives are complete assholes. You see, I'm a progressive, and I know it doesn't mean being a mean-spirited, presumptious jerk.
Know this though: I've laughed my ass off at the thought that my opinions are considered those of an "insider."

(84,711 posts)here on DU that described your dire conditions.
Instead you've posted essays that seem to contradict the rest of us suffering Americans always saying that OBAMA IS THE ONE...and he will FIX ALL OUR PROBLEMS.
When other DU'ers going through "Hard Times" posted that they expected MORE from Obama after Progressives had laid out all the Evil Stuff Bush II had done to destroy the Middle Class for 8 Years...........you have laughed at them and kept pushing out "Blue Lines Screeds" straight from the worst of the DEM/DLC/ThirdWay Web Talking Points.
You never seemed to be "a person hurting" who was honestly posting but some "paid Op" pushing Talking Points from Chamber of Commerce or the Petersen Foundation.
I still don't know where you are coming from...because if I was in "dire straights" I wouldn't EVER end my post with this kind of CRAP: and expect to be take seriously as a dire case of Repuglican Abandonment that you are, to Quote YOU:
"..I can't afford it. I'm unemployed and trying to save my house. All my savings are gone."
I've NEVER seen YOU post or reply on a thread that someone in your similar circumstances here on DU could see YOU as sympathizing or showing compassion to them.
I really wonder who you are or IF you ARE?
