Union Boss Boycotts Breakfast

Charlotte, N.C.—As his fellow delegates dug into sausage patties on the first morning of the Democratic National Convention, Bill Henderson stood outside with stickers reading, “AT&T = Greed.”

Henderson is one of 88 Connecticut delegates to the convention taking place here this week. He’s also the president of the Communication Workers of America Local 1298, which represents 3,200 AT&T workers in Connecticut.

He boycotted the official delegate breakfast at the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel Tuesday because it was sponsored by AT&T.

John Olsen, president of the Connecticut AFL-CIO, decided not to eat.

Lori Pelletier, secretary-treasurer of the AFL-CIO, had some coffee. She blamed AT&T for the recent labor dispute.

1. I'm Guessing Mr. Henderson is no "Boss"

A "boss" is never freely elected by his or her membership.

The term "union boss" is a degrading reference to union officials who are elected or appointed by an elected Representative.

I'm the President and Business Manager of my Local and I stand for election every 3 years. Rather than a "boss", all my members are my "boss" since they pay my salary, I work for them and they can refuse to renew my contract after 3 years.

I did not read in the link where Henderson refered himself to as "boss"...

4. There is no such thing

As a Union boss. Union reps are elected officials, and they are not there to look over the shoulder of their fellow employees, but instead to watch their backs.

The term Union boss is simply big business propaganda. While I am it there is no such thing as big labor either. The just another lie promoted by the U.S. Chamber, and the like.

Only 12% of the population have Union cards, and I believe only somewhere around 7% in the private sector. How is 12% of anything big? Don't let corporate propagandist fool you.
