WTF ... please boycott his show. My one place to go to get away from political stress and now, for who knows why, this asshole is going to get his own show. Makes me sick.

(2,881 posts)He has apparently been hosting off and on for a few years, some special series here and there....I'll still watch the movie if it interests me but not his segments. Here's a link showing him guest hosting as far back as 2009 https://www.upi.com/Entertainment_News/2009/08/21/Dennis-Miller-named-TCM-guest-programmer/87251250890771/ ...yuk... I've been trying out the Criterion Channel...kind of pricey at $11 monthly but they have a couple of thousand classic movies, often with extra features on demand...gets me some of the classic movie fix I need...

(13,580 posts)The Battle of Midway -- A WWII propaganda film entirely by John Ford. What more does one need?
Liberty Valance -- Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne and Lee Marvin. What more does one need?
Grapes of Wrath -- Henry Fonda, cinematography by the renowned Gregg Toland. What more does one need?
The Searchers -- John Wayne, Jeffrey Hunter, Vera Miles, Ward Bond. What more does one need?
Cheyenne Autumn -- Richard Widmark, Carroll Baker and Karl Malden. (Ford's last film.) What more does one need?
The last two above were shot in Monument Valley. What more does one need?
They sure don't make directors like Ford anymore.

JIM: Now that you mentioned it, no.
ROCKY: Want to do the lobster?
JIM: At three o'clock in the morning? Everything's closed.
ROCKY: Oh, don't worry. I know a place.
JIM: Yeah? What kind of place?
ROCKY: You'll like it. It's a nice place.
JIM: They got lobster?
ROCKY: Why, sure!
JIM: What kind of lobster?
ROCKY: Lobster lobster.
JIM: Rocky?
ROCKY: Lobster bisque?
JIM: Canned?
ROCKY: Fresh canned.

(13,580 posts)LOL. I suppose you're right that a lot of "old people" watch, but there are plenty of young people too. Their cruises and special events are packed with people of all ages. The channel runs no advertising so there is no demographic measurement of the channel alone.

(2,419 posts)Miller is mean and not funny. Miigwech's call to boycott the show is reasonable.
But Dennis Miller's obnoxious self-satisfied right-wing humor doesn't mean he should be booed off the stage or that the network that gives him a show should be pressured to drop him.
This is something I don't like about post-2000 progressivism. "I don't like it so it shouldn't exist." We have Colbert, John Stewart, etc., so in any one-to-one matchup on humor, the left wins. Be satisfied with that.

(9,470 posts)And I think he still does some movie-related podcasts for the TYT network.
I don't think this is the same as ESPN giving Rush Limbaugh a seat on Monday Night Football.
Interestingly, it looks like Dennis Miller did some color commentating for MNF for ABC also. I Don't recall any controversies at that time. ESPN also has Keith Olbermann, and Olbermann did Sunday night football for NBC too.

(2,419 posts)Similarities: English-speaking comedians
Differences: Colbert & Stewart are consistently funny, Miller is rarely funny.
See, you CAN compare them.
As you can see, I sympathize with your point of view.

Then he went nutty. He threw it away.

(13,580 posts)His segment is called "Dennis Miller & Friends." The "& Friends" part brings on one additional guest to banter with about the movies. I think last week was Martin Short, so they're probably mostly comedians. His selection of movies is mediocre and then they talk about them briefly in between. The banter isn't very cerebral and the humor is forced but not quite cringeworthy. Nevertheless, I think most TCM viewers like me tune in primarily for the movies without regard to who does intros and outros.
There are many exceptions, though. The segments with Ben Mankiewicz and a "guest programmer" are always worthwhile because he will always have someone who is as devoted to movies and the craft of making them as he is. He sometimes has comedians in this role too. Letterman did segments with him for a while that were absolutely fascinating because, in addition to enjoying Letterman's remarkable wit, it revealed how knowledgeable and insightful he is about movies and the stories they tell.

(96 posts)This is the clown who's incessant babbling ruined Monday Night football when it was on ABC way back when. The mere sound of his voice makes me vomit in my mouth a bit.
