In 2013 he considered running for governor of NY as a stepping stone to the presidency. He was advised by NY politicians of the downside in costs and campaigning so he demanded being made the Republican candidate without a primary. He made that demand several times but even his supporters knew it would not fly in NY.

So he refused to run, with statements and posturing to create an image that such grubbing for office was beneath him and he was in control.

Then he set his sights on DC instead of Albany and found "connections" to get him there.

He might have been surprised that it worked as well as he hoped it would, but I believe that he definitely wanted to win. Why else did he look at NY first as a stepping stone?

I was relieved when he gave up on NY, but it was a deja vu nightmare for me when he went national.

Someone smarter, with more finesse, who was well-liked enough to get re-elected. Obama smoothly won both terms. Trump has to fight to hold his first term and might not (will not, if I can help it) get a second one.
