General Discussion

We had to write about the candidates in the upcoming election
I supported Humphrey, but this is what I wrote about George Wallace...
"George Wallace, I think, isn't capable to cope with the job. And his views on Viet Nam and Law and Order, all I can say it turns my stomach inside out. His running mate Gen. Curtis LeMay, if he wins will start WW III. He and his superior will have their fingers on the "nuclear button".
The page where I wrote about Nixon is missing....
on edit: I got an A- - but the teacher wrote "Can you back all you say?"

(34,105 posts)at that time and I do not remember any teacher discussing politics at all. It maybe just me though, my parents never did and we never had the news on. I think I discovered we were at war in Vietnam about that time (Jr. High) by listening to music.
You were a smart kid and your teacher taught you a valuable lesson, to be able to back up what you say. Cool find.

(9,259 posts)I remember being interested in the election (my folks were Nixon supporters but turned Dem for Carter and stayed that way). Probably the last time a 3rd party candidate won electoral votes.

(7,952 posts)actually swung an election. Tragically in this case.

(12,863 posts)Of the 26 in my class, I was one of 2 who voted for Humphrey; 6 voted for Nixon; and 18 voted for Wallace.
Those votes no doubt reflected the views of their parents. Earlier that year, the assassination of MLK was a very sad event in my household. When I went to school the next day there was an air of celebration on the playground.
