The Reviews are coming in: Christie vs Castro Keynote speeches

Christie:

While delegates praised it, criticism came from all corners: the New York Times, Politico , the Washington Post’s media critic and others. The Wall Street Journal’s Peggy Noonan said Christie didn’t move Republicans to march out of the hall “on fire for their side.” New York Magazine’s Frank Rich said Christie mentioned Romney only seven times and wondered if he was delivering “his first stump speech of the 2016 campaign.” Chris Wallace of Fox News Sunday called it “off key.”

Castro:

Castro didn't screw up. And he delivered some notably good lines. "The American dream is not a sprint, or even a marathon," Castro said, "but a relay." It was a powerful, memorable affirmation of American progressivism that cuts across parties and ideologies. Shortly thereafter, he spoke of his own daughter's entry into pre-school and cameras soon focused on the little girl, up in the balcony, adorably swishing her hair back and forth.

Judging from the reaction of the audience and individual delegates at the Democratic conclave here on Tuesday, San Antonio, Texas Mayor Julian Castro’s address rose above the level of Glenn’s and, while probably not reaching that of Obama, marked him as a Democrat to watch for tomorrow.

This week, there was talk was about whether San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro could make the star turn Pres. Barack Obama made at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. The Daily Beast even explored whether Castro could be the first Latino president. Castro's speech certainly helped to fan those flames. The Telegraph (U.K.) made note of his "Texan accent" and "engaging warmth and optimism" as he spoke of the challenges many face in pursuit of the American dream, and how it is often not realized within a generation. Perhaps the most poignant moment of Castro's speech was when he thanked his mother, who "fought hard for civil rights so that instead of a mop, I could hold this microphone."

San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro’s keynote speech Tuesday night at the Democratic National Convention might not generate the buzz of President Barack Obama’s 2004 keynote, but it still electrified the Charlotte crowd.

Castro, 37, the youngest mayor of the 50 largest cities in the nation, delivered these notable lines:

And there's plenty of time to get all of them registered and make sure they meet the ID requirements.

last night saying his mom's involvement as a founder of Raza Unida would be a problem.

Seems like Julian is not going to let that stop him, and the group isn't so radical. But
this was said by Latinos who are left leaning so I thought it might matter. It would be
easier for him if the country moves left that's for sure.

counts all of Philadelphia County as its population. Allegheny county (Pittsburgh) has three times the population of the city of Pittsburgh itself. No quarrel with anyone, but was thinking of Luke Ravenstahl, mayor of Pgh since 26 years old, now about 32. Julian Castro is very impressive, but all of five years older than Ravenstahl.
