Once the Senate votes to exonerate, Trump will be fully unleashed. Nothing will stop his attempts to steal the election and the Russian machinations to help him. I think impeachment is necessary because the Dems have to stand up for the Constitution and the Rule of Law above any political consideration. It is a narrative of strength. Conversely, the narrative about the Republicans has to be about cowardice and weakness. But there is danger with what Trump will do when nothing can even threaten to restrain him. The question is how do we prepare for that?

(7,430 posts)and that's why they'll vote to convict. They know that Trumpy will destroy Constitutional government. They, too, will see what you see. They'll have no alternative but to convict.
For months we've heard of how rigid the Senate GOPers are, and that acquittal is a certainty. But GOP Senators must be realizing that they will be abdicating their own power by voting to acquit. Trumpy will NOT moderate. He will continue to consolidate power and move closer to a pure authoritarian dictatorship. And that means that nothing that the Senate does or says will sway him. Once he gains enough power, he'll swat the GOP Senators away like mosquitoes. The Senate will become a grouping of figureheads with nothing to do but stand in front of cameras with dour expressions on their empty faces.
During the Senate Trial, GOPers will be faced with the fact that everyone in the country will see the incontrovertible evidence of felonies and treasonous behavior that marks the Trumpy presidency, and they'll be wondering why the GOP is tolerating Trumpy's crimes. The nation will be saturated with the facts of the case. And the GOP will have to answer to voting Republicans why they are lining up behind a felon and an anti-American president. Right now, the GOP is shameless. I'm anticipating that this will change when their constituents tell them that they ought to be ashamed.
