the ones who still say "The South will rise again" seem to think the only reason they don't have a better job, or the modern equivalent of a plantation, is because of people of color.
As this article points out, in the pre-Civil War South, slaves were mostly owned by very few, very rich whites. A healthy, strong male slave cost the equivalent if $40K or more in today's dollars. The biggest plantations had hundreds of slaves.
