Cops are legally allowed to lie to you about facts of the case to trick you into a confession.
Cops are NOT allowed to lie to you about facts outside of the case to trick you into a confession.
The case described above is about a guy inappropriately touching a woman.
The cops first interrogated the guy after making him sleep in a cold cell without a blanket. He agreed to a lie-detector test.
The cops lied to him that a lie-detector test is a straight-up pass/fail test, when in reality the results are merely hints and open to interpretation.
The result of the test, by the own adission of the detective, was "inconclusive". Neither "pass" nor "fail". The detective informed the accused that he has "not passed" the test, which, based on the misinformation that had been provided to him, lead the accused to erroneously believe that he had failed the lie-detector test.
The cops kept badgering him that he was lying and the accused (by his own testimony in court) got confused after hours and hours of interrogation and being lied to by the cops and began to distrust his own memory. So he made statements that make him look guilty.
During the trial, the judge ruled that the statements the defendant had made while erroneously believing that he had failed the lie-detector test were admissible evidence.
During that very same trial, the court also ruled that, as lie-detector tests are not admissible as evidence, the defendant would not be allowed to tell the jury THAT THERE HAD BEEN a lie-detector test and that he had been lied to about the results.
During that very same trial, the jury got a REDACTED transcript of the interrogation, even though the defendant insisted that the jury gets to see the full video-tape of his interrogation.
When you get arrested, do not believe ANYTHING a cop tells you.

(3,138 posts)If they turn a blind eye to this type stuff. Some carry drugs and guns for planting. Many are Bullys looking for opportunities to drive someone to the pavement and humiliate them, even children, they find it satisfying and/or are overly fearful. There are a few good ones, getting fewer all the time

(29,322 posts)Cops even call other cops that whistleblow "rats". Planting drugs may be rare but it happens. A lot of cops are authoritarian.

(46,262 posts)"Lie Detectors" (polygraphs) are not allowed in criminal trials, due to their unreliability.
In fact, polygraphs are not "lie detectors" at all. They detect if someone is nervous or if the administrator is biased.
That's all.
False confessions do occur, the most notorious example being the "Central Park 5."
But I smell BS on this video.

(29,322 posts)They know it is inadmissible but they use them anyway. Sometimes to rule out suspects like the Green River Killer who passed his lie detector.
Line from The Wire
Norris: You know what we use the polygraph for? Leverage. To get them in here and fuck with them.
Kima: No wonder this shit's inadmissible.
Before you say that is a show it was written by a former homicide detective & police beat reporter and the line by Ed Norris was spoken by Baltimore's former police Commissioner.

(16,423 posts)That's what the court ruled: The lie-detector results are inadmissible as evidence, but the statements the defendant made IN RESPONSE to the results are admissible as evidence.
That's what the lawyer in the video above is criticizing: The statements made in response to the lie-detector results were admitted as evidence, while the fact that there had been a lie-detector test was not admitted as evidence.

(7,081 posts)One thing they ALL told me is that if you are ever questioned by cops, get a lawyer. Generally speaking, if cops are talking to you, they are looking for inconsistencies. Inconsistencies make them suspicious, even if the inconsistency was perfectly innocent.
You might consider answering some basic facts questions initially, but if they ever want to "clear some things up," get a lawyer. NOW.
