I've been seeing some comparisons between the current effort to impeach and remove Trump, and the efforts that led to Nixon's resignation in 1974. But in my opinion the differences between the two cases are so big that such comparisons can't be very meaningful.
Here are several major differences:
-- First of all, there was no Senate trial of Nixon. He resigned before the trial started because the republican leaders told him that he would be convicted if the trial were held.
-- Several of Trump's misdeeds are far far worse than anything Nixon did.
-- In 1974 the republican leaders still had some respect for the constitution as well as some sense of duty to the country.
-- Trumps' election has given the alt-right and anti-democratic elements of the population a dangerous level of influence on the current republican party.
Because of these differences, in my view the situation we face today is much more perilous than what the country faced in 1974.
