Farmers stick with Trump over trade

From the very start, President Donald Trump's trade war was painful for American soybean farmers.

China's tariffs immediately wiped out what was once their biggest export market, worth $12 billion in 2017. That was more than a year ago. Soybeans have since piled up in bins, sending the amount in storage up 108% in 12 months. The price per bushel has fallen to a 10-year low.

The situation looks bleak, and tariffs have hit other crops like corn and wheat, too. Many farmers have expressed frustration, and some have even said they no longer support the President. But farmers, a politically important group for Trump, are staying afloat -- largely thanks to Trump's bailout -- and that's keeping some on board with Trump's trade war.

I once saw a sign in a field in Iowa saying he'll wall for welfare moms.

I looked up the government subsidies the farmer recieved to learn it was over $100,000.

There are several databases that track subsidies to farmers.

He is rather like Uncle Adolf in that people like to blame him because the truth is hard to bear.
The truth is that all those nice, normal people you meet on the street put him in power and that truth hurts.
Far easier to believe that some evil person is running the show, that way you can evade responsibility and pretend you didn't have anything to do with it.

By the way I'm not saying you as in you personally, but you as in the general person in the street. Sorry for any inconvenience, or heart attacks.

Mark my words: those bailouts will suddenly become "too expensive" and will be cut.

If we still control the House and maybe take the Senate, all the better for him - he'll just blame the Dems and these sod kickers will nod their heads in agreement.

If they re-take congress he'll instead say that they had to cut the program to "fix the Democrat's deficit" and the yokels will still nod their heads in agreement.

We need to write them off. They're a lost cause.

Remember that a lot of our current members represent farm states and if we expand our numbers, a lot of the expansion will come via districts that are suburban/rural, and those new members won't be gun-ho to bite the hands that elected them.

What we should do is get trade policy back on a sane path and do realistic negotiations with China to resolve sticking points like metals, glass and Tech intellectual property protection.
