I visited and trekked all around Victoria Falls and then did a day of rafting some 25 years ago when I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Africa. It's hard to even look at those pictures based on my memories of the surging force of water I experienced.

For the state of Michigan, 2019 (January through October) ranks as the wettest since we began keeping records in 1895. Michigan joins several states in the Midwest with the record title in 2019. Michigan is one of five states with 2019 ranking as the wettest year (January-October) in 125 years.

flooded lakeside homes, roads scant inches above lake level. Really brings it home to see it.

Of course, the pictures of Victoria Falls don't begin to really show the tragedy befalling the people and other creatures in much of Africa.

“If the rains do not come, none of us will survive."

“This drought is leaving nothing behind. In previous droughts, we used to lose some animals, but we would always have food and water. But this is different. It is ‘sweeping away’ animals and people.”

“This drought is slowly killing everything,” says Mahmoud. “First it ‘swept away’ the land and the pastures; then it ‘swept away’ the animals, which first became weaker and weaker and eventually died. Soon, it is going to ‘sweep away’ people. People are sick with flu, diarrhoea, and measles. If they don’t get food, clean water, and medicines, they will die like their animals.”
