I know we are not supposed to post about sports here...but something happened in the world of sports

that is more of a labor issue in my mind.

Today is a great day for labor. Marvin Miller has finally been elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Marv Miller finally brought an end to the tyranny of the MLB owners. He ushered in free agency and finally allowed the players to be treated with dignity, rather than as if they were property.

He was a great American. Here is an article written at the time of his passing:

Congratulations to Mr. Miller on his induction. May he rest in power.

in Jim Bouton's bestseller, Ball Four. Bouton was a former Yankee who was an outcast in the world of baseball before he wrote his book, even moreso afterwards. He talked extensively about Miller's efforts to form a player's union and was fully supportive of those efforts. If you've never read Ball Four, do yourself a favor and do so. It was written from the perspective of baseball in 1969, but it's mostly a timeless portrayal of what used to be American's Favorite Pastime.

Honestly didn’t remember the name Miller, but do remember the parts about the union. That’s a blast from the past. Great book.

3. Reserve clause ...

Basically, if you got cut from a team, that team still controlled your contract, so you couldn’t play on any other team.

It’s as if I work in the tech industry and my contract was held by Sony and Sony decided to lay me off, I wouldn’t be allowed to work for any other tech company. I could work at any other field, but not in my chosen profession.

Curt Flood was the player that got free agency started, with Marvin Miller at his side.

It was a great day for baseball, and America, when it went away. It cheapened us as a people to live in a society that allowed for that kind of labor law.

And, yes, Curt Flood was another person who deserves a great deal of credit for helping to change the system. He gave up his career so that we could begin the process of bringing an end to the corrupt system.
