#LanguageMatters - "new Soviet Mafia"

Can we stop using terms like Oligarchs?

Trump Org is money laundering for the "new Soviet Mafia".

Guliani was caught conspiring with the "new Soviet Mafia" to rig the 2020 election.

The Republican party is bought and paid for by the ""new Soviet Mafia".

If we're going to use the "right" words, Russian Mafia would be more accurate.

Besides, Putin doesn't need any encouragement.

I always thought of it as a thug with ill begotten financial resources. Like a ruthless monopolist.

But Oligarch is kind of a fancy word, and not well understood.

$oviet/Russian Mafia,
$oviet/Russian Syndicate,
$oviet/Russian Black Market Economy

are dirty words. And the fact that unquestionable taint is attached, might be the better choice of words to address them.

1) the Oligarch Mafia problem isn't just Russia, but former Soviet block countries

2) Putin's whole goal with all of this is to rebuild the Soviet block

3) it connects the dots between Ukraine and Russian issues
