(14,143 posts)I always thought of it as a thug with ill begotten financial resources. Like a ruthless monopolist.
But Oligarch is kind of a fancy word, and not well understood.
$oviet/Russian Mafia,
$oviet/Russian Syndicate,
$oviet/Russian Black Market Economy
are dirty words. And the fact that unquestionable taint is attached, might be the better choice of words to address them.
