According to new reports, Donald Trump Jr. illegally shot and killed an endangered argali sheep on a taxpayer-funded hunting trip in Western Mongolia in August — and the Mongolian government retroactively gave him a permit rather than tread on the toes of the U.S. government.

The report was met with outrage on social media, with commenters blasting Trump Jr.’s bloodthirst for endangered animals and the wealth and privilege that allowed him to kill them with no accountability. Some even compared it to the right-wing outrage about Hunter Biden being given a free position on the board of Ukrainian energy company Burisma.

Argali are considered an endangered or threatened species throughout their entire range, due largely to habitat loss from overgrazing of domestic sheep and hunting. As the world's largest sheep, the lure to gather a trophy specimen is strong among sports-hunters. They are hunted for both their meat and their horns, used in traditional Chinese medicine, and poaching continues to be a major (and difficultilly managed) problem. Argali have been extirpated from northeastern China, southern Siberia, and parts of Mongolia. Populations of predators such as gray wolves and snow leopards have appeared to have been negatively affected by the scarcity of argali.

What I also think is rather clear here is that someone (government or local) approved this hunt beforehand. So there's complicity on the Mongolian side as well. You don't just show up in a foreign country with your hunting gear (and secret service in tow) without somebody on the ground being in on the plan. Right? So, "protected status" must be a kind of flexible (and fungible?) concept in that particular part of the world.

(trophy hunting is something I don't understand .. but then, I don't have a great deal in common with Ted Nugent and that ilk either. - not surprised that DonnieJr would fit in though.)

I could really assume that, if Jr. could get away with it, he would hunt humans, just for the thrill of it. Maybe his family can make a world where it is a right to do so?

One wonders how much deep contempt a Son who has a Father like that can harbor and project? The endangered part was probably a thrill also since cold-blooded predators like that can seek forms of status we don't.

It is not hard to translate that act by Jr. into an indicator of the Trump Mob's views about people they feel are lessor than them, (which is a superiority complex that may have no basis in fact). I think the policies and behaviors of these slumlords supports the disdain and lack of respect they have for most of us and even a morbid hatred for humanity and animals, aka, life. Stalking and killing may be a way of life for them, even if you take it as a metaphor for their overall values.

What ARE the ethics of predators like that? How dangerous is it for the rest of us when the culture provides the means for them to capture more and more wealth and power and then coddles and encourages them when they get it?

Well, just look at how things are going and where they may end up. This is not so much about "we the victims", but recognizing the predicament we are placing our nation in when we enable addicts to get their fixes of power and wealth to such a degree. Can you expect a culture to thrive and survive that way? Is progress even possible with that kind of baggage and weight?
