Nancy Pelosi is showing women how to age fearlessly and ferociously

Not since Carry Nation and her hatchet or Lorena Bobbitt and her knife have men in Washington been more threatened by a woman. Even Hillary Clinton at her height — in the White House, in the Senate, at the State Department or at the head of the Democratic presidential ticket — hasn’t had the impact that Pelosi has had.
.................................................................

Pelosi was on the shortlist to make Person of the Year. Much love to Greta Thunberg, but isn’t it about time to give Pelosi the title? The last time a single American woman had that honor was in 1936, four years before Pelosi was born. And if the title is all about disruption, few people have done more to upend the stale notions of women in the American workplace and in politics than Pelosi, who flicks away criticism and taunting like a Jedi walking through a hail of stormtrooper blasts.

.................................................................

At a time when women over 50 are taking their ages and graduation dates off their résumés, when a study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research showed that gray hair and wrinkles lend men the appearance of authority and competence in the workplace while women who show physical signs of aging are written off as irrelevant, Pelosi’s refusal to slow down is breathtaking.

She is three months from being 80 years old. Fewer than a dozen American presidents have even managed to live longer than her — let alone lead an impeachment at her age. And now she’s threatening to withhold the articles of impeachment from the Senate until she can get a guarantee of a fair trial. Chutzpah, brass, audacity, boldness. Pelosi has displayed it all.

Underestimate her — and the American women watching her every move — at your peril.

Trump made fun of the speaker’s teeth; enemies circulated a doctored video that made her appear drunk. Sen. John Neely Kennedy (R-La.) said of Pelosi that “it must suck to be that dumb” as Trump flashed a Biff Tannen grin at the insult.

When Pelosi stood up to make her point as the only woman at a table full of men discussing Syria, Trump called her “unhinged.”

She hasn’t let any of it slow her down or back her down. She purses her lips and mercy claps at them, refusing to engage in the profane, ugly language that swirls around her.

Still, they’re after her. It’s the men who become unhinged at her power.

The morning after the president was impeached, the New York Post minimized that huge fact on its front page. Instead the cover displayed a photo of Pelosi in her somber Impeachment Day black suit, calling her a “Swamp mistress” and declaring “It’s your funeral.”

I wish it was just the men on the Right who are unhinged by her unapologetic authority, and her lack of concern at their disapproval and disgust, blowing holes in their presumtion that their approval is the ultimate goal and metric of a woman's self worth. Calling her a "hag" was supposed to shut her down. She just smiles and refuses to just go away and knit somewhere.

She is such a wonderful role model! How many 79 year old women do you know who are this bad-ass?

I am going to add sassy as well.

The young ones think they are the first to display these traits. Learn from the past as you reach to your future. You would not be where you are today without us.

Especially in accomplished women.

Michelle Obama’s admission that she suffers with imposter syndrome proves it doesn’t discriminate. Here, we revisit her wise words on overcoming that feeling that you’re not quite good enough.

Everything the article said is true, and probably more.

But the Lorena Bobbitt comment was gratuitously violent and compared Carrie Nation to her as similar. Carrie Nation was a principled, but overzealous vandal. Bobbitt committed a violent act of attempted murder. It isn’t an enlightened comparison.

It was an ignorant comment at best and some editor should have removed it before final publication.

And Nancy Pelosi would say the same.

wrongly so.

Just as they were Hillary Clinton.

All of these women exercized power in a way that suprised men, so clearly they felt it must have been wrong and dangerous to all men.

The older I get the fewer fks I give about what people think of me. It's so liberating!

We are very, very lucky to have Nancy Pelosi in charge. If anyone says that a woman can't beat Traitor Tot, remind them that NP beats TT every day.

Depending on the circumstances involved. I think it's because we really have nothing to lose.

I'm 71. Decades ago I recall reading stories about how Soviet women would sometimes make their way to a distant military outpost where their son was based and being horribly abused. Apparently the Soviet-era military was brutal for young conscripts. Anyway, the mothers would have gotten letters from their sons, and some of them went to the base, grabbed the son in question, told the commander of the base off and departed with the kid. I recall being completely unable to understand how exactly they found the nerve to do that. Once I got old enough, I got it.

I know that sounds a bit like urban legend, but I recall running across a few such stories back in the 1970s, and they didn't sound like urban legends.
