Why do Republicans threaten violence if Trump loses? Miguel de Unamuno told us in 1936.

In the months after the begin of the the fascist uprising that became the Spanish Civil War, Basque author Miguel de Unamuno was present at an event where he was preceded by a maimed Fascist general who enthusiatically responded to a shout of, "¡Viva la muerte!" Long live death. Although obviously not intending to sound like Islamic suicide bombers 70 to 80 years in the future, that's pretty much what it sounded like (so much for Catholic claims of "pro-life" ).

Though aged, weak, and near death, himself (about 2 months later), Unamuno stood up and let the Fascist general and his supporters have it. Correctly predicting the outcome of the Spanish Civil War, Unamuno addressed the general, saying, "Ustedes vencerán, pouque poseen la fuerza bruta, pero no convencerán." This is also sometimes quoted in the less formal form, "Venceréis/ pero no convenceréis" )

"You will conquer, because you possess brute force, but you will not convince."

Indeed, the American radical right seems to know--if not outright, then at least instinctively--that they will never convince--unless at gunpoint. That is why they makes such noises about violence, and send out photos of groups of them armed to the teeth. Like the Spanish fascists, who only won with the help of Hitler and Mussolini (and their brute force), they know they will never convince America with their arguments (to the extent that their rantings can be so labeled), and therefore realize they will only prevail though the use of brute force.

Unamuno also noted, "That which the Fascists hate above all else, is intelligence." That, too, rings eerily prescient.

Use violence and hate and fear , and lies against others whenever they don't get what they want, or are threatened. Now they have republicans working for them from being compromised they once again help putin promote whatever he wants here in this country, like they've done promoting putins propaganda here for him.

went after the GOP leadership they hate intelligence but are easily bought with the promise's of money and power. Plus their base is all ready primed to be led by a fascist dictator because of their mind set of hate.

Trump requires intense security screening for his hatefests. That is not only for his security but for his deplorables. No one in their right mind seeks a violent confrontation to convince their own people.

We had our own fascists here in the 1930' s. Some prominent people were among them. But we didn't have .a fascist leaning person in the WH then as we do today and Congress wasn't controlled by them then. At least we now have the House back.

The intensity of the polarization today makes me feel like there is a current of violence beneath the surface of society that could erupt into the open. The RW seems eager for an excuse to enforce their will with violence.

Pero, para mi, no pasaran.

In Madrid, in 1939, banners with "no pasarán" were everywhere.

A pesar de todo, pasaron. There isn't always a happy ending.

que Espana no tuvo antes de la Guerra Civil.

But I prefer that it never come to that. War is a failure of minds and ingenuity in solving problems.

That is why they try to control every aspect of what is taught in schools. It doesn't matter whether it was how to be good "socialists" in the Soviet Union or East Germany, or how to be good "Christians" in rural Indiana or Wisconsin. Without indoctrination, people are always in danger of beginning to think for themselves, and THAT strikes fear into the black heart of every control freak extremist out there.
