A California middle school history teacher has reportedly been placed on leave after students said she made racist comments, including calling for the return of slavery.
According to a report from The Los Angeles Times, this marks the second time in two months that the teacher, whose name has not been made public, has been disciplined for such remarks. She was previously put on leave in late October.
The unnamed teacher works at the Space and Aeronautics Gateway to Exploration Magnet Academy in Palmdale, Calif., where the L.A. Times says about 70 percent of the school population is composed of Latino students followed by black students.
Students say the teacher is a supporter of President Trump, displaying Trump memorabilia in the classroom and praising his proposed border wall with Mexico. Students also allege she said she would "bring back slavery" and gave them assignments having to do with immigration and Trump.
Palmdale School District's assistant superintendent of human resources said the teacher has been placed on leave and an independent investigator has been hired to probe the allegations. Mental health resources have also been offered to students.

(115,672 posts)this teacher is a sick, terrible person who shouldn't be allowed anywhere near children.
At a news conference Thursday, students said the teachers classroom is covered in Trump memorabilia, including posters and mugs. Her assignments veer into political views, the students say, citing one example in which the teacher asked the class to underline all phrases having to do with Mexicans, immigration and Donald Trump in a news article about the U.S.-Mexico border...
Another student, Miguel Gonzales, said the teacher failed him because of his race, even though he completed all class assignments. His mother requested a change in his class schedule. He said the history teacher would give him the death stare while walking down the hallways at school.

(6,509 posts)Honestly, what is it about Trump that causes people to lose their minds? Does she not like having a job? Does she presume that Trump followers are going to stand up for her? I wouldn't have my kid in her classroom.
Has she found some magic way of getting paid leave? Surely she can figure out that this will not end well for her? Oh, wait, it already did work out for her once.
Boy, these people are stupid. Everyone knows, "First they came for the Jews..." She's a teacher, she's female, and she'd be one of the first to go.
What in bloody hell is wrong with her?? Parents, time to permanently fire this teacher, who is teaching your children to hate.

It was challenging, but rewarding work, to sometimes walk into chaos and set it all straight.

(11,295 posts)this lands at least partially on the school and administrators. WHAT administrator thinks it's just just peachy that a classroom be sporting all sorts of Trump paraphernalia? (quite apart from the heavily ethnic student population) Warning bells anyone?

Does it have something to do with the magnets?

(62,444 posts)Makes you wonder about the other 30%
Are the other 30% non-Latino, or what?
But how is it even possible for 70% of students to be followed by other students of any race? Because unless there are a few conga lines, then you couldn't possible have more than 50% of the students followed by the other half of the students.
This kind of thing happens to me frequently.

I don't have time just now to nail down more recent figures, except that for the state as a whole, Latino and white appear to be almost exactly equal by now, at about 38% each.
I love California in some regards. This is one of them. That teacher needs to leave her profession and leave the state.
