New Jersey auditors and lawyers had been battling for several years to collect long-overdue taxes from Trump's casinos.

Of course, there's no way an honorable man like Chris Christie would ever have cut some kind of improper deal with a con man like Donald Trump! (nudge nudge, wink wink), but the New York Times thought it was worth a look:
By the time Chris Christie became governor of New Jersey, the states auditors and lawyers had been battling for several years to collect long-overdue taxes owed by the casinos founded by his friend Donald J. Trump.
The total, with interest, had grown to almost $30 million. The state had doggedly pursued the matter through two of the casinos bankruptcy cases and even accused the company led by Mr. Trump of filing false reports with state casino regulators about the amount of taxes it had paid.
But the year after Governor Christie, a Republican, took office, the tone of the litigation shifted. The state entertained settlement offers. And in December 2011, after six years in court, the state agreed to accept just $5 million, roughly 17 cents on the dollar of what auditors said the casinos owed.

If he was a minority, or poor, he would be serving multiple 20 year terms in prison for all his crimes.

If you steal a couple billion dollars from Medicare, you get to be Governor of Florida and U.S. Senator.
The moral of the story: If you are a thief, make sure you steal large enough sums to pay off the people charged with investigating you.

(6,254 posts)deals with State Democratic power brokers, the politics bosses who controlled the State house and senate. NJ party bosses control the state, NJ is much like a mafia state where the bosses, not the governor, wield the power. So Im sure many law firms and accounting firms who contribute state candidates made huge fees on negotiating Trumps debt down. Whats worse is that the funds collected by Trump were trust fund taxes taken directly from employee/employer, sales tax, etc. taken directly from paychecks to be held in trust for the state and transmitted to the state monthly. No small business person would get this type of consideration. Disgraceful.

I keep asking myself what do these people think? Do they lie in bed (well they lie everywhere ) and say to themselves "I am so special that I know my precious leader will not do to me what he does to everyone else, he will appreciate my loyalty to him and in return be loyal to me." Then they find out they are not as special as they thought they were, that happens as the wheels of the bus hit them from side to side.

harming people through bridge closures, making public beaches his private domain and
having people run off the road and then blaming them, although that last one may be
a NJ Governor thing.
