Why did Murkowski come out and speak about impartiality in a Senate trial?

Every Republican had been silent up to that point.

She let it be known that she did not agree with Mitch McConnell's comments about working hand-in-glove with the White House on their impeachment defense.

In my opinion, she is not alone. Although she is the one Senator with the independence to do so without fear of reprisal from Donald Trump. They tried to get rid of her once and failed. She hasn't forgotten.

But, it will not be an easy vote for any Senator to say that there should be "no witnesses". My guess is that there are several besides Murkowski of that opinion.

Also, they will let McConnell know confidentially that they will not vote the way he and Trump want them to vote. McConnell knows this. He is playing political games, hoping Speaker Pelosi will cave in that demand.

The danger for McConnell and the Republicans is that the longer this trial is delayed, the more likely it is that there will be more emails, more witnesses, and more court decisions to come out. They need the trial over as soon as possible, with or without witnesses.

In fact, wasn't there just an e-mail that was uncovered that showed that the WH knew that what they were doing might be illegal?

I know my view is cynical. But every time I get hopes up that a few republicans will do the right thing, those hopes are dashed when I realize they were all talk.

Murkowski can act all sincere now and say she’s impartial and vote to acquit, and some will believe she sincerely thought he shouldn’t be removed. She’ll get a pass.

They’ve already shown that they are unable to feel shame. They’ve stayed silent or approved of children in cages and voted for totally unqualified judges, etc. And you’re right. History won’t be kind.

she lost her primary and ran as a write-in candidate and won with zero help from the GOP. I remember her being pro choice and for her defending Planned Parenthood. I remember her and John McCain, and Susan Collins saving the ACA by voting no to its repeal. Murkowski is not from a safe Republican state when she cast that vote. She may well still be a Republican but she does the right thing now and again.

The are very pro state rights and don't like the Federal government telling them what to do. Many are pro Alaska independence. They are crazy religious Republicans that you get in the south.

but as always I'll believe it when I see it. "It" being her voting against the Repub party line.

Collins has been doing that for basically her entire term: nice moderate talk, followed by party line voting.

...and 3 other Mormon Senators who have just received a stern rebuke/warning from a Mormon women's group for ethical government, telling them that Trump is vile and must be removed from office. I wonder what all of them are saying to each other behind the scenes, because those gents have sure been silent in public.

The outcome is not pre-determined, not yet.

Nancy Pelosi, Mme Speaker, my hero, has continued at her own pace & so far been proven right.

Just like Susan Collins of Maine.

They play a game to cover their asses by APPEARING to be fair, then they do whatever the turd orders.

Collins has done it so many times she is a joke. Yet she still gets away with it.

Murkowski is playing the same game.

They may even have enough republicans switch to allow witnesses and documentations to be introduced, but will then still cave, state that yes, it was improper and inappropriate, but not an impeachable offense, then vote not to impeach. It is all carefully choreographed. They know exactly how many, and who, specifically, needs to "posture" for their constituents, but STILL get re-elected.

That is how Moscow Mitch knows exactly how much he can get away with.
