They are the types that demand that sandwich shop workers get paid at least $15 per hour, but turn around and have a hot assed chafe about paying $10 for a sandwich. They don't see all the background expenses involved with making ANY business work, so they ride their high horse. They don't see the times the Doctor gets called in the middle of the night and has to quickly freshen up and make her way to a hospital.

It is so fucking easy for people to complain. Maybe they should go to Medical School and walk in the shoes of Doctors. When some talk about business, I challenge them to open a fucking business and then keep talking shit after a year of running it.

Growing up, two of my parents’ best friends (and our neighbors) were both orthopedic surgeons; another was a plastic surgeon.

I was extremely accident prone as a child; never did they fail to show up when my mom called in a panic or when they heard through their wives that something had happened.

And they never billed us. Mom told me this much later. One put my knee back together after an awful accident, the other set numerous broken arms, wrists, etc.

Both of them died much too young, one from an aneurysm in the hospital parking lot and the other from a number of things...primarily probably caused by alcoholism. He beat that in later life, but didn’t last long after.

I remember both of them fondly. They both worked many, many hours that I’m sure contributed to their early deaths. You’re right, they work a lot of hours.

Our office hours are 40 per week. But I routinely get to the office two hours prior to opening to do paperwork, and work on charts when I get home. So while I'm grateful that I don't have an MD's workload, I still put in 50-54 hours per week. And that's when I'm not on call. Office-hours MD's undoubtedly put in more.

It wasn't mentioned in the OP.

What was mentioned is that the doctor would do her job for a mere $200k. From that I infer that $200k would be enough to cover student loans, insurance and maintain a reasonable lifestyle.

The conclusion one draws then is that this doctor has a large discretionary income, one the OP believes excessive.

I was simply suggesting a way to distribute that income so the OP does not have to suffer from the benefits of affluence.

To boast about salaries? My apologies for being inartful. My point was the medical salaries are insane, and I’m not clear why insurance companies pay doctors so much. Ugh.

I looked at what my Doctor bills for him and his Nurse spending 12 minutes with me for a routine visit. It looks hefty, but then he has two receptionists, rent, Internet fees, equipment rentals. Each of those items come out of his fee that he got for seeing me.

But what looks big in Nebraska is more that likely struggling in LA or SF, or Seattle, or NYC.

Some here have a socialistic mindset where people should make the same amount regardless of their skill level. While I believe high earners should pay far more in taxes, I am also perfectly fine with people that have put in the effort to gain specialized skills, or took a risk and started up a successful business being compensated for that.

The OP seems to feel out of place in the SOs' life. So instead of sitting down with that person to have a heart to heart and decide whether they are life partners, the OP brings the issues into a public forum. I didn't see any of it as bragging like some here implied, instead I saw it as a cry for help by a person that can't sit down with an SO and talk about values and life perspectives.

I am not one that feels that Doctors are overpaid and I have made that clear before.

At first I was with the OP and understood it as highlighting that maybe the wages for some doctors can be really high. I didn't see any intent to brag.

But reading post 13, I think there is an envy problem concerning both the job (and the standing in society it can have) and the money the SO makes. That is the real problem I'd try to focus on if I were the OP.

Apple was starting to gain momentum and the firm got a piece of the investment banking pie of these high tech companies. They used to give us bonuses twice a year. A few times I got bonuses of at least $50,000 part of it was an IRA contribution. I saved those bonus letters and can’t believe I got so much. I saved those bonuses and used them as a down payment on my house and had my kitchen remodeled and expanded and to this day still have much of that money in my IRA. In 2007 I moved the IRA from mutual funds into cash. I had left that business in 1996 and the broker told me I was crazy to cash out now. After the market crashed in 2008 he called and asked me if I had any more insight in the market and if I wanted to come work for him. I said “no I like the money but not the early morning hours”. A guy I worked with at the time kept his money in those mutual finds and he got pretty much wiped out sadly in 2008.

Saw Steve Jobs several times in our offices he was a jerk in real life) sadly.

I assume she works for a big group to get a bonus at all. So the for profit industry is working out quite well for some. I’m sure lots of people were denied treatment to allow for such big bonuses.

I’m all for doctors making a good wage but not at the expense of others either.

They need to reduce their carbon footprint to nothing, right? Gods forbid they should have the good fortune to accumulate savings and buy a car that works, etc etc.

Same with MDs. Student loan debt be damned. Malpractice insurance be damned. How dare they make a living that can pay these things off?

Furthermore, I have heard of bonuses coming to people who are working for big corporations -- top salespeople and the like. I have never heard of a practicing doctor who got bonuses. What did you say she does again?

My suggestion, don't marry her if her profession is so out of sync with your ideology, so much so you had to post about it on DU.
No, I don't think your "prospects look good" at all because $$$ is not the most important aspect of successful relationships.
As a healthcare professional, I find it hard to believe that this was the result of communicating with her. You might want to sit down and have a discussion on the process of becoming a medical doctor and the function of a medical doctor. I'm sure you know for the most part it is not a 9-5 job. I used to work in labor and delivery before working in the ICU. Babies don't come on a schedule. Sometimes one baby is scheduled for Dr. A to deliver. Dr A plans to leave after. Then another of Dr. A's patient is in labor, then another and before you know it Dr. A is at the hospital all day with few rest in between. It was working in labor and delivery that solidify my view that I could not become a MD. You may have a different outlook if you listen to a few MDs.
There's a lot wrong with our healthcare system, compensating people for their hard work is not one of them.
Edit to add: As an OBGYN how is her malpractice insurance?
