An interesting choice for an alleged news broadcaster. Air a segment with a woman who's woefully ignorant of the dangers that measles poses to the public and not bother to contradict her, but that's Fox News for you.

After being told about a potential measles outbreak at five major US airports, one woman at an airport shrugged off concerns to Fox News, telling the network that its an insignificant disease and not a big deal.
Measles is not a big deal to me at all, the woman said. When I was a child I had the measles. Its an insignificant disease, and I think its stupid that people are making such a big deal out of it.
Though immunization helped drastically curb the disease, measles killed more than 140,000 people in 2018 alone, according to the World Health Organization most of which were young children.

(4,066 posts)I got shingles before I was of the age that my insurance company would cover the cost of the vaccination. It was not a fun time.
If people don't know, the shingles rash generally follows along a nerve path. Which is why it's so painful when you touch it. Mine was across my abdomen and right side. I made the mistake of scratching the itch before I knew what it was. BIG mistake.

(16,829 posts)I had blisters on my upper chest, one side only. I was talking to a friend and she told me it was probably shingles, which I didn't know anything about. So by the time I got to urgent care for the antiviral it was too late to be effective.
Very hard not to scratch. I remember having a pharmacist walk me through the whole OTC section looking for something topical for the pain and the only thing we could find was something you spray on a burn.

(16,829 posts)I got shingles when I was 58 and the vaccine wasn't available to anyone under 60. Now they've changed that.
I've had chicken pox, I've had measles, and I've had shingles. I can only remember the absolute misery of shingles. But I would never NOT get a vaccine for a viral disease where they had a good one.
Exception: This year I got the flu instead of the flu vaccine. When I went to the pharmacy and asked for it in early November, they were out. I got the flu before they got the vaccine.

(63,221 posts)many horror stories about the affliction to leave it up to chance. That is one thing that I don't ever want to go through. Thanks to everyone on this board who has warned us. If it wasn't for you, I would have never known to ask for it.

(694 posts)The doctor later told my parents I hd the worst case he had ever seen in which the patient survived. In fact, we learned years later that he had already made out my death certificate with only the date and time left blank, since he thought it was a foregone conclusion that I wouldn't recover.
Last year, almost 70 years later, I had a titer test done for measles. It came back at ">300." My body remembers measles virus after all those years and is still ready to take it on, and take no prisoners.

(14,847 posts)I had rubella when I was little, and it was nothing. I had measles, too, and that was a very different story.
I had rubella when I was little - barely noticed it. It wasn't formally diagnosed at the time - but since I had to be tested later for immunity, we confirmed that I had actually had it. Never had the measles. Won't since I'm vaccinated.

(4,503 posts)even more so that some may realize.
Just listened to an interview with a Harvard Medical researcher who has studied the effects of measles on the immune system. It has been discovered that the acute deleterious effects of measles are outweighed substantially by the damage caused by the virus to the immune system. Antibodies to many pathogens built up over our life span preceding the measles infection are significantly damaged, along with the immune system cells themselves, such that the subsequent mortality from measles is as much as five times higher than immediate mortality from the measles virus itself. Such damage can furthermore extend over one's life-time.
So, take the current measles mortality of about 140,000 deaths per year (mostly children BTW) and multiply it by five...

He replies: When I was young I had Toelio. She says: I thought it was called polio. Anyway, he takes off his pants and she screams again when she sees his knees which are all full of sores and bumpy: what is wrong with your knees? He replies, when I was young I had kneesles.
