White House Counsel Drives Aggressive Trump Impeachment Defense
WASHINGTONTo lay the groundwork for an expected Senate impeachment trial, the White House sent a full black Suburban to the Capitol earlier this month.
Inside were members of President Trumps impeachment team, including aides from legislative affairs and communications offices. Crammed into the back row was a triumvirate of attorneys: White House counsel Pat Cipollone and his top deputies, Patrick Philbin and Mike Purpura.
In the three months since the impeachment inquiry began, the counsels office has spearheaded the White Houses response, writing blistering letters to Democrats declining to cooperate with their demands for documents, arguing that witnesses need not testify before the House and meeting with Republican senators to prepare for a trial, expected next month.
Though Mr. Trump has solicited advice elsewhere, resulting in a competing bids for influence by aides, the president has chiefly relied on Mr. Cipollone for impeachment strategy, officials say. He has been a near-constant presence in Mr. Trumps office in recent weeks.
