First they came to Loan Money to College Students, and I did nothing

GOP Rep: Government-Issued Student Loans Put U.S. On ‘Slippery Slope’ Toward Holocaust

Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD) says he supports student loans, so America’s youth can get a good education. But the government getting involved in education, he believes, puts the country on a slippery slope that could lead to, say, something like the Holocaust.

At a town hall event at a college in Maryland on Wednesday, Bartlett said he could not find “a shred of evidence” in the Constitution that the government should be involved in education. It’s “certainly a good idea” to give students loans, Bartlett said in a video posted by the Washington Post. “But if you can ignore the Constitution to do something good today, tomorrow you will be ignoring the Constitution to do something bad,” he explained. “You could. There are more people in our, in America today of German ancestry than any other … The Holocaust that occurred in Germany — how in the heck could that happen? And when you start down the wrong road, it can be a very slippery slope.”

The Bartlett campaign did not immediately respond to TPM’s request for comment. Barlett’s spokesperson told the Post that the student-loan remarks fit with the congressman’s belief in limited government.

After all, he just accused every Democrat who voted for or signed a student loan bill of preparing to exterminate millions of people, just like the Nazis, just like Goebbels and Hitler....

His opinion on rape and abortion is close to Rep. Todd Akin's.

This is from yesterday's Gaithersburg Gazette:

"Two weeks after U.S. Rep Todd Akin rocked the country with his “legitimate rape” comment, U.S. Rep. Roscoe G. Bartlett made a similar statement on rape’s connection to pregnancy, which his office says has been taken out of context.

In YouTube videos, Bartlett told a town hall in Frederick on Aug. 30 that few pregnancies actually result from rape.

“If you really — there are very few pregnancies as a result of rape, fortunately, and incest, compared to the usual abortion,” he said in the video. “What is the percentage of abortions from rape? It is tiny. It is a tiny, tiny percentage.”

Lisa Wright, spokeswoman for the Republican representative, said Tuesday that his comments at the meeting were clearly about the proportion of abortions connected to rape, and that his was an accurate statement."
