CHARLOTTE, NCThe first family has turned more than a few heads at this weeks Democratic National Convention, where the president, as he greets delegates and waves to crowds of supporters, is often accompanied not only by his wife and two daughters, but also his rarely seen 19-year-old son, Luther.
The shy, slightly overweight teenager, who has lived his entire life with his mother in central Illinois, seldom appears in public with the president, with whom he has reportedly shared a somewhat distant and occasionally strained relationship.
When I saw that kid with President Obama, I had no clue who he was, said Georgia delegate Kathy Tyson, stating that the teen appeared to have difficulty sustaining eye contact with others and stood uncomfortably alongside his father when he shook hands with voters Thursday. I guess he does kind of look like the president, though a bit shorter and stockier.

(14,624 posts)but it's not even remotely funny. I'm not trying to be a sanctimonious prude . . . I love a good joke, but this is just stupid. Not you, bluesky, the article. Please, no nasty responses.

(1 post)I think that The Onion is making the same kind of joke Andy Kaufman often made: The real joke is the reaction of people who fall for the gag. Kaufman would plant someone in the audience to heckle him and shake him up, and the uncomfortable feeling that the audience felt was the joke.
Remember when Howard Stern's house band Pig Vomit did a cover of the Rolling Stone's version of Harlem Shuffle before the Stones' version was released and told his audience that he had the exclusive right to play it before it was released? The joke was the insane reaction of other DJs who thought that they had been scooped.
I love these insider jokes myself.

(5,611 posts)story, then the joke is on them. But sort of odd, even for The Onion.

(45,274 posts)The RW will pick it up & run with it regardless of whether the source is unmasked as the Onion. By sheer repetition they can Swiftboat it into the mainstream & convince a majority of the public that it's true.
Look at the Lyin' Ryan non-scandal, the way they continue with their lies despite repeated exposure and condemnation. A lot larger portion of the population besides just their base seems to be capable of falling for the BS.
We are now engaged in a great battle to see which will prevail--the forces of civilized democracy or those of rapacious robber-baronism gone rabid, backed by unprecedented capability to drive their messages repetitively and hypnotically into our minds.

(223 posts)This reminds me of the birther thing just another made up story that some people will be stupid enough to believe.
Jackpine Radical
(45,274 posts)This is all the seed that is needed to create another Birther/Madrassa/whatever story, and perhaps one with equal persistence despite repeated exposure as a "joke." The RW would just say the story was planted in the Onion to de-fuze it. You know--like the Bush Mafia did when they planted the Bush cocaine story with Jim Hatfield (Fortunate Son) just before discrediting him & then "suiciding" him.
