The US National Archives: We made a mistake.

We made a mistake.

As the National Archives of the United States, we are and have always been completely committed to preserving our archival holdings, without alteration.

In an elevator lobby promotional display for our current exhibit on the 19th Amendment, we obscured some words on protest signs in a photo of the 2017 Women’s March.

This photo is not an archival record held by the @usnatarchives, but one we licensed to use as a promotional graphic. Nonetheless, we were wrong to alter the image.

We have removed the current display and will replace it as soon as possible with one that uses the unaltered image.

We apologize, and will immediately start a thorough review of our exhibit policies and procedures so that this does not happen again.

Yeah, they screwed up. They admitted it (very untrumpian). Okay. Go and sin no more.

Remember, one of the goals of the RabidRight is to make us distrust all government institutions. Unless this starts becoming a habit, I see no need to throw the baby out with the trumpwater.

We don't know who or why:
1. pressure from "some boss"
2. decision to "not make waves"

Either one is SO wrong for someone in the National Archives - the "keeper" of truth and what actually happened - recorded for history.

Somebody employed there does not understand the mission of the place - and has made a serious distortion of an historical event.
What if they decided:

Ford's Theater - a disgruntled person with a bad seat
Washington Crossing the Delaware - some drunken buddies out fishing
Gettysburg Address - fund-raising for the 1864 campaign

No, don't throw out the baby - but make damned sure that baby is nowhere near any decision-making situation.

display -- not as an official record. They don't even control the original image (they licenced it for the occasion). Just like you'll never see a Chevrolet in the background of a Ford advertisement, they chose (badly, considering who they are) to blur out distracting references to things (like Comrade Fatass) that don't have any relevance to the 19th Amendment.

BBD&O (Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn, the advertising agency) can get away with things like that. The National Archives can't (and shouldn't). It was a dumb decision, but I don't see the evil in it (unless, like I said, it starts becoming a habit).

Most of the time photographs are licensed for display, and that license normally does not include the right to alter the image. I'd imagine if the photographer got wind of this he/she would be plenty pissed and would insist the altered image be taken down.

more than ever!!!!

This has more meaning every day:

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

The suspicion is what happens when you can't trust anything coming out of the whitehouse. When politicians can't speak the truth for fear of retribution and would rather lie than risk angering a person that has no conscience and believes the ends justify the means. I hope for a reckoning and urge everyone do the right thing and get the liars out of our government.
