Senator Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) on Tuesday said he doesnt have the votes to block a resolution to allow witnesses in the Senate impeachment trial, according to multiple reports.
McConnell made the admission in talks with Senate Republicans after President Trumps defense team concluded its arguments.
If the Senate votes to summon witnesses, Democrats will likely attempt to call on former White House national security adviser John Bolton to give testimony in the trial. On Sunday the New York Times reported that Bolton wrote in the manuscript of his upcoming book that Trump had conditioned aid to Ukraine on that countrys commitment to conduct investigations into Joe and Hunter Biden.
Republicans may react to a subpoena of Bolton by summoning Hunter Biden and the government whistleblower, whose complaint sparked the impeachment inquiry, to testify.

(557 posts)I honestly do not want to be a downer but,;He is a cunning man and could ,along with the Republicans could be pulling one over on us.He could be making back door deals with the WH and pulling a scheme to make people think what he says is true when it is really not. I also would not trust that they have not already gotten to Bolton either to make him a better deal:maybe another job at the while house for his silence.

(46,166 posts)McConnell may promise all kinds of things for their states. But if Trump isn't removed form office he'll stab them in their backs for this perceived betrayal.
Unless they vote no on witnesses and documents they'll have targets on their backs. Even just standing up to the Trump team today could be a bridge too far in Trump's eyes.

McConnell is dirty and vile.
