He's the guy who rushes in after a person has died, and then makes a valiant and obvious attempt at CPR..
He's all worn out, sweating profusely as he accepts the plaudits and news coverage for trying so hard to save the guy..
He did it to needle Trump (which is a good thing), but nothing changed..
He's just like Poor Saint Susan of Perpetual Concern, who still votes party line..

(14,560 posts)I have no problem with all the hyperbole given the time we are in.
I mean Flake acted all put out like that then rolled over with the SC pick. Alexander came out and flat said 45 was guilty, the voted to acquit.
It works to our advantage to play the moment up to illustrate that there is a possibility, admittedly VERY remote, that a republic can act with honor.

He knew what was coming down the pipes with maggot and his bunch and the rest of the republicans in Congress. He knew what he was going to face and yet he still voted the way he did and it takes some kind of courage
To face that.

(6,280 posts).... for republicans to do the honorable thing in this case, and when one actually does the honorable thing, a faction of Democrats decide the best move is to shit all over him. If this shallow sentiment prevails, what happens the next time a republican is needed to do the honorable thing?

(677 posts)I think he gets credit for being a person among monsters, a truth-teller among liars and a moral agent among those who have cultishly yielded their moral agency to another. He may not be a hero, but in a room full of people with hearts of stone, his heart still pumped blood.
Years ago, my friend told me about a study that was demonstrated and discussed on PBS in which people were told an obvious false thing in front of a group. Those people came to AGREE with the false thing simply by force of the groups pressure. My friend said it was unbelievable to watch. But, I guess this is a thing that happens to people. Now, imagine if those people are vulnerable in some way- like they want to get votes from that group. All the more, they will yield their thinking to another, I guess.
Im not justifying anything. Just saying that to resist a groups pressure, people have to have a reason, I guess. All but one of the Republicans had no reason to think or stand for themselves.
Mitt had a reason, like it or not, and was able to squirm out from under the group-think and stake his own claim to part of the truth.
