Ferrets are Cool

I am 63.

This country is going to be deeply divided for the rest of MY life.
I am afraid it is going to be deeply divided for the remainder of my grandkids lives.

Yes, it is depressing to think about and it is difficult NOT to think of it.
Maybe it's why I spend to much time immersed in music.

I’m old enough to remember the pre-women’s movement and the pre-Civil Rights Act. I remember when women couldn’t get credit cards and when “the pill” came along. We were also deeply divided in the hippy counterculture revolution and the Vietnam war.

If we get rid of Trump we’ll survive just like we always have.

I'm 61 and very happy with the progress made in my lifetime for civil rights, gay rights, safe and legal abortion, etc.

Vote Trump out this year and we can get back to the business of progress. His brain is stuck inn the 1950's.

I hate when people post those "nostalgic" days of the past because there was open segregation and women were not considered equal (hell, they still aren't by many).

A couple of the main differences are the proliferation of the gun lobby and people walking around armed and dangerous AND the difference between the haves and have-nots. When I was growing up, the only time I saw a gun was when I was hunting (I don't do that stuff anymore, by choice) and at that time, CEOs only made about 6 times the amount of their workers.
Also, the tax rate was fairer for the common person at that time.
We will never get back to those days, IMO.

the day a radical right wing activist judge stopped the vote count and handed the country over to the republicans who didn't keep the country safe, lost both revenge wars, crushed the economy and doubled the national debt in just 8 years. If you're going to divide a country, stealing the vote is the way to do it.

Infants born today will be seeing unreal droughts with water wars and mass starvation deaths in poorer countries when they are in college years, hurricanes that will make today's storms seem tame, and daily summer temperatures in Florida and the deep south probably hitting 115 to 125 degrees, just like what is in Dubai and the rest of the Person Gulf today.

It will probably be in the 130 degree range in the Persian Gulf in 20-30 years, so today's grandkids will probably be seeing an exodus from mid east when they are in their 30s or 40s. Fun times ahead. At 73 I'm glad to miss the forthcoming misery.

The real chalnge is the number of people on the right who have been so brainwashed by Fox & Russian propaganda that they have become untethered from reality. That appears to be new.

Our daughters will be 37 and 35. As dual nationals, BOTH of their countries (Germany and the USA) will be divided for a long time time to come. Bot let it happen by not paying attention to creeping interference by powers playing a longer game than either country. But they live divided, themselves (one in New York, one near Frankfurt), and somehow do well in their chosen fields.

Soon, it will be their world, and theirs alone to try and manage, hoping to leave a place worth living in for their own children. Sure, we all doubt their generation will do any better, but there's nothing wrong with hoping. Just always keep in mind, there are powerful people out there whose countries are less well-off than we are, and will do anything to bring us to their level. It's easier for them. Full bellies tend not to start fights (not everyone is Dick Cheney).

in this country and the predominantly angry white males who have no hesitation in shooting up crowds of innocent people.

The country has always been divided. It was divided right from the start when almost 20% of residents--the Loyalists--did not want independence from England. It was divided in the Civil War. It was hesitant to get into another World War--after the first one--until the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. It was divided black and white through Jim Crow. It was divided during Vietnam.

No, it's the guns that really bother me and make me consider leaving. If I were 10 years younger, I think I'd be out of here IF that orange sack of $hit wins another four years in November. Plus, the angry white males with guns probably won't go away if he does lose.

For now, I spend less time watching the news. I plan trips. I enjoy walking to the ballet and the symphony from my apartment. I watch the dawn every morning and sometimes it is quite a show. I walk my dog. I read a lot.

But I do worry about the future of not only this country, but our planet.

Yes, we are indeed divided, because Republicans have departed from their longtime posturing about “big central government,” “adhering to Constitution,” “law and order,” “fiscal responsibility,” “values,” etc. More broadly, they have created (and continue to generate) a “new reality” that isn’t based upon measurable facts whatsoever; rather, it’s whatever those currently in power wish it to be. And that’s frankly insane.

Until Trump, Americans had never witnessed such a dangerous amassing of executive power. The ideals of a constitutional democratic republic have been utterly discarded.

The country is in uncharted territory now. A minority of zealots has learned how to control and concentrate power over the majority. The United States has its first truly fascist dictator.
