General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI am proposing a new DU Group - Occupy the Media (from your laptop) - anyone with me?
You cannot go onto DU without at least one thread about some bs being spewed by the "librul media".
I think if they are going to call it the Librul Media - we need to give them a real reason to say that.
Even Huff Post is reporting today that Erin Burnett lied AGAIN on the air (why does she still have a job?)
This is what I propose - if we can get the group added -
1. Everyday someone starts a thread with just the day & date - example Sat 9/8/12. All of that days documentation will stay in one thread to keep it simple and organized.
2. People can post links to stories, or to video clips where the lie was told - OR - when someone did an excellent job of reporting a news story & they deserve kudos. It can be something we witnessed (with a link) or a link to another site where they caught a lie.
3. A link to how to contact that news source must be included.
4. Posts cannot include "omg - I can't believe what Andrea Mitchell just said" without documentation. If we are going to call out Mrs Greenspan on her bs, we need to wait until that clip of her is posted somewhere & then post that link.
5. Most important is a way to verify that they did stretch the truth by providing a link to the truth, a link that you would feel comfortable emailing to Andrea Mitchell to show her that was she said was incorrect.
6. Duers check in daily and shoot off those emails to the truth offenders. When they have sent an email to that offender, they can reply with "done" to that specific charge so we have a way of keeping track if we are making any noise.
---------
Summary~
We compile the bs on a daily basis, post links to the lie told, links to the truth and a link for a way to contact the bs-er. The one who catches the lie does the work of providing these links.
Then DUers in mass will be able to check in and take a few minutes to email the liar - as they will have all the facts needed at their fingertips, and all they need to do is compile a quick email. Bam! They will hear about it!
We cannot forget to provide positive reinforcement to those in the msm that deserve it.
Hopefully we can all get in the habit of checking in daily, and in doing so, we will have President Obama & VP Biden's backs.
And I kinda like their backs [img][/img]
If DU junkies, like myself, are willing to do a little extra work this election cycle....
We have the power to shape the media's behavior!! Yes we Can!!
How do I know this? I have my degree in Special Ed. Behavior Modification does work - if you are consistant
And if not - well, we get the msm we deserve as the lies will take on a life of their own, as we have witnessed in the past.
Thoughts???? Suggestions???? And most important, is there anyone out there willing to do a little more online work everyday???

But I was thinking.....are you sure you need to start a new group? Groups always get ignored. How about just doing it on general discussion...just a new one every day with a big announcement, or however you want to do it.
It needs to have major visibility and we need to get it kicked and rec'd to the top of the greatest page...
RepublicansRZombies
(982 posts)then we post it again in GD?
jillan
(39,451 posts)everything BUT we will need to post daily reminders in GD to come help send out emails - or - if we see someone call out the msm in GD, we remind them to cross post it there?
What do you think?
My main goal is to keep it organized, one place to go to on DU to call out the media and we definitely should figure out what works best.
I will definitely check out that site. I never heard about it. See - it's working already
RepublicansRZombies
(982 posts)can we start today pulease?
They can give us a group later.
Who/What should we go after first?
There are so many activists on DU...spreading messages through twitter and facebook....
I really think this could work!
I guess everyone is mailing Meet The Press with good questions about that fool on the show tomorrow.
Anyone have that email handy?
Someone needs to ask Mitt if he plans to outsource California,Texas, New York,Florida? Maybe let China take care of those states?... because that's the only way he's going to cut the debt.
Of course the middle class will still be expected to pay taxes. That's how he made money at Bain and I can't see how his 'experience' would play out any differently.
'Your business practices sent jobs overseas, how will that help our country?'
'How can you possibly blame Obama when you personally were sending jobs overseas?'
How can the media NOT ask that question?

As far as who to go after? Anyone and Everyone that reports spin instead of the truth. That's what I was thinking!
In the meantime, go ahead and post away in GD

(297,029 posts)the last few days on those Occupy threads. As in, that's a major place they should be if they want to start at the crux of the cancer on America.
I don't even have a tv anymore ..and, I stopped watching all "news" on the tv in 2002 but I know via reading about it online that it's only gotten exponentially WORSE because they aren't being called on it ENOUGH. Not losing their advertisers like limbaugh.
Excellent idea jillian.. I'd like to help even though I don't have 1st hand knowledge, if that's possible.
Over at the Obama Diary they monitor media constantly and Tweet Accountability.

(39,451 posts)My main goal is to have everything it all in one place so DUers will know and hopefully respond in numbers.
There are probably soooo many DUers that never make it over to the Obama Diary.

(2,570 posts)for many years now, and no greater service to the reality-based community or the republic we share can be provided than involvement in a concerted effort to end the myth of an omnipotent "liberal" media that stands in the way rightwingnut truth.
I always do the contact thing, including for example, reaming the ass of CBS for hiring that hack Frank Luntz, and MSNBC over the Coulter-clone, Cupp. Why focus on lies alone?
I don't see it as just an "election cycle" effort either. They need their medicine daily, 365 days a year.

(12,233 posts)It's very Cyncal in most of it's coverage of all things politics. The black dude spends most of his time trying to be funny, but would do better just articulating a view point (and he can do it- he has very eloquently made end show statements that show he has a brain). That Cupp woman is ridiculous... Waking, talking oxymoron. The white dude has a constant smirk on his face. And the white chick must feel like "WTF"... I swear I can almost see a bubble thought above her head saying what kind of freak show, clown rodeo did I sign up for. She's the only one with a brain and some substanance.
It's kinda like that show Tucker uses to be on crossfire or something that Jon Stewart destroyed, except it's 4 of them wasting time and air and space. They are just as bad as Chuck Todd. Man he's a tool. And Mrs Greenspan and that foolish morning show with Mika Mouse and Blowhard, Drad Intern Joe. What a morning it would be if it was a show hosted by Up (sat and sun am is like heaven).
stupidicus
(2,570 posts)made with crossfire. I guess I don't get it, because I can't even force myself to be friendly or nice to someone like Cupp. I guess if I was paid as handsomely as they likely are, I might be able to.

(75,480 posts)Count me in. There used to be a website called Media Whores on line who used to try to do this. I think it's time to bring that back.
Also, we should contact the offending journalist's emails and new's organizations with our fact checks if you know what I mean. I beginning to feel it's the only way to start bringing some truth in reporting back.

(7,603 posts)And it appears to be low traffic, so you don't have to worry about the day slipping off of page 1. Check out the Economy Group to see a similar concept in action. Tansy Gold hosts STOCK MARKET WATCH--(day/date) on weekdays. and Demeter hosts Weekend Economists--(theme) on weekends. Check it out- the concept is simple. These are long-running posting series and have a loyal following. Salmon Chanted Evening does something similar with his Sunday lolcats in the Lounge.

(39,451 posts)difference. I think most people just go to GD, Greatest, Politics and that's it.
If there is something in already place, wow! Let's take advantage of it and let our voices be heard.
pamela
(3,469 posts)I don't think people should have to wait until a link or video is posted in order to post something. A quick response to the bullshit is imperative and will be more likely to get action. If Andrea Mitchell says something false at 2 pm and starts getting immediate reactions she may correct her misstatement or at least watch her tone for the rest of the show. With the 24 hour news cycle, if we wait until the video is up and then post and then email, they will be well on their way to moving onto the next cycle.
I understand your reasoning. You definitely don't want a bunch of "OMG did you hear that?" types of posts but I think if several people actually did hear something and can describe it accurately, it would be ok to act on it immediately. If the group has clear guidelines, I trust DUers to convey the information they heard without having to have "proof." Often there are many other DUers watching the same segment so providing a quick email address to respond for those who saw it would be appropriate and then a clip can be added later for others to join in.
I've been thinking we should also start an online activism group and perhaps this would be a good place to do it. Occupy the media AND the "new media" for example. I know people laugh at armchair activism but the media pays attention to Facebook and, particularly, Twitter. We should all have Twitter accounts and we need to be "following" all the media types. That's a great way to respond quickly to their BS and it is visible to the public. Unlike an email, which can be ignored and deleted, if you post to Andrea's twitter account that what she just said is false, everyone can see it and it can not be deleted. When your colleagues see you are being called on your BS, it has more impact than a personal email, which no one but the recipient will see.
I'm kind of rambling here. I like your idea and I'm just brainstorming a bit.
jillan
(39,451 posts)are watching, and that we had enough.
Maybe just keep the part about the link to the facts to send to her, to prove that she is full of crap? That would work!
I don't know why I am picking on Andrea Mitchell over the others
About twitter - alot of us are new to it and are lost - including me!
Would you be willing to write up a Twitter for Dummies post? I think there are so many DUers that would be forever grateful.
I love brainstorming
pamela
(3,469 posts)I have an account but I only have 4 followers-3 spammy accounts and Chuck Shumer! I mostly just follow media accounts and politicians and rarely post anything but I like getting the links and updates from the tweets and I retweet good stuff when I see it. I haven't shared my account with friends or family because I mostly have it for following political stuff.
If a group started that was media and new media, I'm sure there would be people who could teach us all about Twitter. We really need to be using that more-the media lives and dies by it these days. I also thought with a group like that, we could all pm each other our twitter and/or Facebook accounts and "follow" each other. That would really maximize the effects of our efforts.
It's easy to open a twitter account and you don't have to use your full name if you don't want to. Once you join, you can "follow" whoever you want and then when you check twitter, you see all their tweets on your feed. I "follow" Obama, Shumer, Mikulski, Hoyer, Slate, Michael Moore, Nate Silver, Anderson Cooper, Andrea Mitchel and some other media types. I tweeted Andrea that day that that guy made that disgusting aspirin between the legs joke. She started getting bombarded with tweets about that and I think that's why she responded so quickly.

(7,603 posts)I recall you had an excellent link list for media contacts. That would work well in this kind of group. Tansy Gold includes a link list in her daily STOCK MARKET WATCH posts- and it's useful. Example here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/111621859
A Twitter list of media contacts would have a similar value.

The media CAN be swayed. Us viewers are their revenue and this gives us power to change things
jillan
(39,451 posts)If we do all the work and provide the links - wow - we just might be able to sway the media.
