The Romney Plan is unlike anything I have seen in politics

Last edited Mon Sep 10, 2012, 02:09 AM - Edit history (6)

Really... there has never been anything like it in the TV age.

I think my summation (below) of the Romney position is accurate, and even somewhat charitable to the man... though for some reason Mitt himself does not use the words "tax increase" to describe a change in tax law that causes somebody, somewhere to pay $5 trillion in specific taxes that they would not owe under current law. (If the property tax on my car goes up $200 and the DMV explains it isn't a tax increase because they plan to send a $200 check to the Governor's brother-in-law... well, you don't need to be Grover Norquist to see that the guy paying the additional $200 might consider it an increase.)

Romeney proposes that we cuts taxes by $5 trillion in such a way that the rich receive the great majority of the benefit, reworking rates so that the very wealthy will be taxed at the lowest rates in the last century of American history.

This tax cut centered on the profoundly wealthy will not increase the deficit because it will be revenue neutral—offset by tax increases totaling $5 trillion.

Though Romney has specified who will receive the $5 trillion in tax cuts, he will not discuss the question of who will pay this off-setting 5 trillion dollar increase before the election. He does not think that people have any legitimate need to know who will be paying $5 trillion in new taxes.

It is really not far off from, "After becoming president I will launch a nuclear attack against a certain country I have in mind, but I would prefer not to say before the election which country that will be."

is the definition of all things good, so if Mittens were to eat six puppies a day, and Bernie ate no puppies at all, the centrists would claim the only moral position is to eat 3 puppies a day.

It is actually the most dramatic and menacing tax increase anyone has ever proposed.

Five Trillion Dollars, the largest tax increase package in history, will be taken from some completely unspecified group of people.

It is fiscal Russian Roulette for voters.

At least we know what Clint Eastwood should have been talking about at the convention.

an inordinate amount of welfare for themselves at the expense of the rest of us.

And what tactic are you referring to? The Republicans are doing their usual - lying about anything and everything.

BTW, welcome to DU for the short time you'll be here. What's your favorite pizza?

18. Romney's plan
Mon Sep 10, 2012, 12:28 AM
Sep 2012

The Federal Govt makes it's money through taxes & bonds. The HUGE majority of it is then spent on Seniors, poor families & children, and mostly defense.

Mitt Romney is promising that taxes will go down, defense spending will go up, and elderly/seniors programs won’t change for this generation of retirees. So three of his four options for deficit reduction; taxes, old-people programs, & defense, are now either contributing to the deficit or are off-limits for the next decade.

Romney is also promising that he will pay for his tax cuts, pay for his defense spending, and reduce total federal spending by more than $6 trillion over the next 10 years. That being said, the ONLY big pot of money left to him is poor-people programs. So, by simple process of elimination, poor-people programs will have to be cut dramatically. There’s no other way to make those numbers work without punishing the middle class & poor, SEVERELY.
