In pictures: Deserted cities as anti-coronavirus lockdowns introduced around the globe (8 pics)

Many cities and towns around the globe are looking completely deserted, as governments introduce tougher measures in a bid to contain the spread of deadly coronavirus COVID-19.

Tourist destinations and business hubs that used to be packed with people are now quieter than anyone could have imagined, locals say.

Gran Via - Madrid

Eiffel Tower - Paris

Madeleine Church - Paris

Spanish Steps Piazza di Spagna - Rome

Medieval old town of Dubrovnik, Croatia

Wuhan Airport

Financial center - Quito, Ecuador

6. Good to see actually

Those empty landmarks hopefully means people are isolating as they should be.

Very surreal nonetheless

for films about a deadly whatever taking over the planet and everyone is dead or hiding.

9. Poor Wuhan - they have been through a hell I cannot imagine, with virtually no notice at all

I hope someday they recover and shine brightly and live happily ever after!!!

Itís heartening to see empty streets - it means the rest of us DID have a heads up, and maybe a bit of a quarantine for a time will spare many people a sad and untimely death.

Hang tough, everybody

30. Two days ago China reported 8 new confirmed infections

yesterday that was 13.
Today was ZERO...

Isolation works.

But it really has to be the Chinese model... Everyone but health care, police, and delivery people, stay home (in china under threat of arrest).

Anything less just lengthens the virus pandemic period.

Note I am not saying China is ready to go back to work, etc... but the progress is promising.

32. The thing I'm wondering is, when they finally relax these restrictions will the virus pop up again.

They can't keep doing this indefinitely. Or maybe they just hope to hold out until there is a vaccine.

35. It might... mostly because the rest of the world

might bring it back to China.

That would be like the "Spanish Flu" that swept the world 3 times in 1918 and 1919.

At any rate, a second wave would, hopefully, be dealt with much better (containment this time, with extensive testing and quarantine around the index patients).

36. That's a major concern, and I heard a commentator say

earlier today that as the virus rebounds, it will take out those who stayed well during the first round. She (wish I could remember who!) stated that there are still more people now who didn't get sick, so the second round could see even higher numbers.

Of course, it's still unknown if someone can get re-infected. There have been some reports from China of repeat cases, but it still needs to be proven that the patient had been completely recovered.

41. That's what I'm afraid of. As you know the Spanish flu pandemic in 1918-1919 had

three waves and the second wave was much deadlier than the first.

Love that song. I've frequented Irish bars my entire life. I'm a tall, muscular guy with auburn hair and a reddish beard. I'm actually of German descent, but on St. Patrick's Day I can pass for Irish in a nano-second. I used to have to beat the ladies off with a shillelagh......until I found the one that tickled my fancy anyway. Now I'm too old for all that nonsense, but the memories....... ahhh, the memories.

34. But the beaches in Florida are still full of kids

In close contact with thousands of people theyíve never been in contact with before. And the ones who donít decide to stay at school while they go to class online will take the virus home to their families and communities and undo all the sheltering in place that weíve been doing. The stupidity of allowing the beaches and bars to stay open is breathtaking.
