DU'ers, I need your input....

I'm going to be sending an email to some of my friends regarding suggestions about support in the upcoming elections.

Here's a list I've come up with so far:

Senate:

Amy McGrath - Mitch McConnell/Kentucky
Sara Gideon - Susan Collins/Maine
Michael Franken - Joni Ernst/Iowa
Jaime Harrison - Lindsey Graham/South Carolina
John Hickenlooper - Corey Gardner/Colorado
Steven Bullock - Steve Daines/Montana
Mark Kelly- Arizona

House of Representatives:

Valerie Plame - New Mexico

I realize there may also be seats we currently hold that may in danger. I'd very much appreciate any feedback. (I had composed a lengthy post explaining why I'm doing this and all of dynamics but realized it wasn't necessary. Suffice it to say that I have good friends who are politically informed -but not as into it as I am - who have come to me in the past for suggestions and opinions regarding where their monetary contributions may best be used.

Thanks for any input...

3. Barbara Bollier in KS

Senator Pat Roberts is retiring. There are plenty of Republican candidates competing for his seat. She could flip it. She changed from Republican to Democrat in the statehouse a couple of years ago when they just got too crazy and she had to abandon hope of changing things within that party.

As a Republican, she endorsed Laura Kelly over Kris Kobach, which is when I think she switched parties.

She's a doctor. She's all about Medicaid expansion, reproductive rights, and education.

Her area flipped the Representative seat with Sharice Davids in 2018, and Hillary lost by only about 1% in 2016, which was a major change in this part of KS at the time.

4. Iowa will be having a primary in June (yeah, I know) to pick who faces Ernst

There are five candidates. One doesn't seem to be serious, two don't really appear to have a chance. There have been no polls, but just based on talking with friends we all seem to be split between Des Moines realtor Theresa Greenfield (who I believe has been endorsed by the Party and DFA) and Admiral Franken.

Just thought I would throw that out for informational purposes. Just didn't want you to assume Franken had already been chosen as Ernst's opponent.

I myself have sent money to Greenfield, but am really liking what I have seen in Franken. So I am split also.

7. No - haven't seen anything yet.

Someone told me that SOS Pate said something about mailing out ballots, but this person said Pate sounded kind of sketchy.

The early voting period doesn't start until April 23rd. We were a bit puzzled how the SOS's office would determine someone's party affiliation especially when you can declare being a Democrat to the poll workers and vote in the primary. If Pate sent ballots out to everyone and expected the Republicans to play nice and be honest I would have some real problems with that as I think most would.

BTW - I think whichever candidate comes in 2nd this time would be a prime candidate to take on Grassley in 2022 when Grassley will be 89 years old. I think Franken in particular could give Grassley a real battle after 2 years of going around the state getting name recognition.

15. Thank you, rurallib....

This is exactly the kind of information I'm looking for.....people who are actually living in states that are "in play." I realize that some of the primaries haven't happened yet, and that's why I'm in an information gathering mode now. My sister (who's retired and politics is her hobby) is who gave me a lot of the information I had. Thanks again

5. I don't know if this will help

I have already contributed to:
Amy McGrath, Sarah Gideon, and Jamie Harrison

Scheduled: Bullock and Franken

Large contributions already sent to Mark Kelly and Valerie Plame, but these two are personal friends, and got special consideration way early. Mark is sure to be the candidate, and I like his chances against McSilly anyway. Valerie looks good in her primary, but has some headwind. Emily's List has, to my consternation, endorsed one of her primary opponents, so she won't have Mark's free ride to the nomination.

35. Don't neglect the NC Senate seat, either.

That one isn't out of reach.

Not all of my personal connections make it into office by a long shot, by the way. Ever since my grandmother was a big NYC fundraiser for the senatorial campaign of the mayor of Minneapolis in 1948 (his name was Humphrey), my family has had connections to the "Minnesota Democratic Mafia." That didn't exactly help Fritz Mondale in 1984. My friend (and fellow 12 string guitarist) Howard Dean had a short but unsuccessful run at the presidency 20 years later, although Howard's leadership of the DNC did reverse the party's fortunes drastically in 2006 and then 2008.

Still, I feel good about the chances of both Mark for Senate in Arizona and Valerie for the House in New Mexico. With any luck, Wendy Davis will get into the House from Texas as well. I have supported her since her run for governor, although at the time, it was a hopeless cause. That may not get me into a position where I can get bills I like introduced in Congress, but it will still be nice to have a few more people on Capitol Hill I can call by their first names!

11. Senate: Cal Cunningham --Thom Tillis/North Carolina

Cunningham has an excellent chance to send Tillis home.
A late February poll shows Cunningham ahead by 5 points, but you can bet the Republicans will be pouring money into North Carolina trying to keep Tillis' Senate seat.

29. Absolutely yes.

Tillis needs to go. That is a man who resents laws about putting up signs to remind restaurant workers to wash their hands after going to the bathroom. He actually brought that up as a thing he wants to change. Un-freaking-believable. Out of all of the issues facing this area, he wants restaurant workers to not be reminded to wash their hands in the bathroom.

22. LPBK2713, As I used to tell the kids (when I was teaching)

whom I miss so much.. , Thank you for thanking me. A lot of my energy is going to go to the 2020 election. I'm currently not working (I was a full-time substitute teacher and we received an email from the agency who employed me after the L.A. schools closed that we'd be eligible for unemployment. Having said that, I'd prefer to work and will be speaking with the agency tomorrow because they may need distance teachers). Also, I was very fortunate that a friend has an elderly mother who she needed help with so I was able to have some income that really helped just at the right time. I saw someone else post "All hands on deck" and without questions it really is ALL HANDS ON DECK! Absolutely NO QUESTION!.... I mean I kind of feel it's do or die....Look at the situation we're in now because of the mothe* fuck** and those who voted for him....

17. May I suggest---

Project Payback as a vehicle to pool resources and target the most heinous/vulnerable GOPher Senators. They are targeting these critters, partly for their vulnerability, and partly for their ugly roles in blocking the removal of the head shitgibbon in the White House. I think it could be a powerful front for directing fire at these miscreants if it can develop the resources we can all bring to it. They got my donation last month, and will likely get more, if I can spare it

25. smirkymonkey, great question.

That's one of the reasons I posted. I figured that fellow DU'ers in some cases would have an idea of what's happening in various states/races and, sure enough, I've already gotten some good information....

This is going to be my project. I'd love to be able to work on this full-time but, of course, I need to have some mula coming in- LOL! Having said that, I'm going to try to make some contacts to see if I can do this full-time through the election but would need someone to fund me. Tom Steyer maybe!

I'm not planning on that so if things ever get back to any kind of normal and I'm working again, this is still going to be my project/mission. My parents marched with people who marched with Martin Luther King, Jr. I was so fortunate to be raised in a progressive home where my mom would have families live with us off and on until they could get back on their feet. And we didn't even have money to speak of! We (my siblings and I) were given core values that are as much a part of me, my brother (who has passed) and my sister as the color of our eyes.

24. Help Kentucky give Thomas Massie the boot.

Shannon Fabert for KY 4th District Representative vs Rethug Thomas Massie.

Her web site: https://fabert2020.org/

Part of her message:

Why Iím here

Growing up in my house, Iíve always been politically aware with a uniquely inclusive perspective. I am the child of an immigrant and veteran who as a child was thrust into the Civil Rights Movement. I grew up with stories of activism as a family history. I grew up believing that our best leaders worked hard and respectfully to represent all of their constituents, not just the ones that voted for them nor for special interests. I saw elected officials working across the aisle in bi-partisan efforts for the sake of the country and the people they represented. I believed that these elected officials rose up from humble beginnings with altruistic intentions. Today, we are all acutely aware that we are living in a vastly different hyper partisan reality. But we donít have to be.

My husband and I moved to Northern Kentucky in 2009 as newlyweds. We were blessed in perilous economic times that his company brought us here as they shuttered their US ground operation in Pennsylvania. Since that time, weíve embraced Northern Kentucky as our home. Iíve followed the actions and words of the current Representative of Kentuckyís 4thCongressional District and those that have run against him; it is how I arrived at this point. Iíve staked my professional career on building consensus in hard business environments. Iíve fought hard to earn a seat at many leadership tables by not going with the status quo. I did this through the kind of relationship building and servant leadership that we deserve to have in the House of Representatives. I could continue to be voter with a limited voice but you should know Iím not that kind of person, I am the kind of fighter that has to stand up when I see something wrong. And right now, we need a fighter for all Kentuckians, not just the 1%. It is with a full heart (and maybe a hard head!) that I declare my intention to run for the Democratic nomination for the 4thCongressional district.

Thank you for composing this list, Upthevibe. We know you can't list all the Democratic candidates running but perhaps we can at least give them a little exposure.

Valerie Plame is simple name recognition. She has almost no connection to the state. A fine human being I am sure, but Leger Fernandez has roots in the state and a track record here as an attorney.

Don't know if you saw, but at the recent Democratic state convention, Teresa got a resounding endorsement from state Democrats, and Valerie Plame was left out in the cold.

Again, I wish no ill of Ms. Plame, but she is not the right person for this office.
