I was raised as a Christian, and when I was a kid there were no Jesus jokes. I noticed Jesus jokes first appearing on things like Saturday Night Live, and I thought it was a bold move to openly mock Jesus and other biblical figures.
And there are definitely some Christians I know who would be offended by any off color or less than flattering depictions of Christ or other biblical figures. But as an atheist, I cannot be offended by humorous depictions of gods, sons of gods, prophets of gods or any other religious jokes.
I certainly wouldn't participate in a riot if someone made an offensive movie about Jesus, or an off color joke, or a sexual innuendo, cause I don't believe it any of it. And of course I think anyone who would riot and murder over such offenses is an idiot, and so I could be called an anti religious bigot in that regard.
Somewhere there must be a list, compiled by historians schooled on such matters, of how many people have died over religions? Why does religion sometimes break out into wars? We have enough reasons for hating and attacking one another, do we need to kill over imaginary deities in the sky, and perceived insults to our gods?
As an American Atheist, I want all of our people OUT OF AFGHANISTAN, out of Iraq, out of Iran, out of the middle east entirely. We cannot change the extremists, we cannot negotiate with them, we need to fix our own nation before the same kind of bullshit happens here.
Atheism can be a good thing, and more and more people are waking up to this fact.

(9,137 posts)that the insults you are not immune to target your "deity" of choice. The games of religious, political, national etc. identities with strong emotional attachment are same regardless of the object of attachment.

(4,879 posts)It's the same as being offended if one would slander, say, Cinderella. Was she not the chosen one?
