Obviously the Marine Corps can do it cheaper. Obviously the Marine Corps has more resources available to it than Blackwater does. So the reason must be that the Marine Corps is not up to the job. Apparently they are neither strong enough nor smart enough. Otherwise they would still be doing it, wouldn't they?

I think it is a matter of numbers - Marine detachments are relatively small so they are augmented by contract security in hot spots.

If I was an ambassador, I would rather be guarded by a former special forces soldier with years of combat experience than by a 20 year old marine. Experience is what the contract security provide.

That's a change from earlier reports that two of those killed were Marines.

CNN also has been reporting that a U.S. Marine Embassy Team is enroute to Libya from Spain to beef up security.

But yes, we use mercs for things like embassy guards.

I haven't heard if mercs were the guards in Libya.
