There was a jerk approaching and making fun of mask wearers in the grocery store today

Yep, a full grown idiot was being a total jerk at my local Kroger today. He approached and made snide remarks to myself and at least 3 other people that I witnessed. He asked me "what are you afraid of, this isn't New York". I wasn't quick enough for a good come back, but one lady told him "no, but is America so mind your own business". I've always hated assholes, but I especially hate empowered assholes!

Didn't your mother teach you it's rude to comment on other people's clothing?

Why on earth would you ask me that?

Shouldn't be too surprised. That man's behavior is being demonstrated daily on TV. The Orange One's daily televised rants and rages (aka COVID-19 updates) are just like that. Saying he won't wear a mask, but he would "if he thought it was important". So some significant portion of the country will believe their "Dear Leader", ignore medical advice, and promote immediate herd immunity by culling a million or two. Then the ones who survive will say he did a fantastic job, and only X million died.

Some people (clueless, distracted ones) just don't pay attention and they have backed up when I've done that, getting they were too damn close. The Haters won't get it, but then they are stupid to begin with and getting away from them is good.

IT'S "FUCK OFF AND DIE ASSHOLE!!!"

I don't know it seems a little more appropriate if not more truthful...all things considered.

More than half the people I saw at King Soopers yesterday were wearing masks or
bandana's. Several home made one's as well.

Staying home in Denver as much as is possible...had a dental appt. and went to the store for a script.

My autistic son is used to a particular routine and diet. He's had to give up his routine. The whole family and several items of furniture have suffered for it. If I can get him his morning and evening PBJs, then I'll put my homemade HEPA filter mask on and do my best to keep something normal for him, like going to market once every 6-8 days.

107. nobody said all the time

this is your own little bugaboo.
(I personally have gone about every 9th or 10th day thus far .. and I'm comfortable with that amount of caution and level of distancing) Also note that they have deliberately kept the stores open for this very reason. People are following the information they're given .. it is not a proscribed, or even a discouraged, activity. In my area we serve a population that is often coming in from considerable distance, and lack options that might be available in more urban areas. The stores themselves have made huge efforts to mitigate where they can (select hours, limiting numbers inside at one time, disinfecting each basket/cart for new arrivals, spacing in checkout lines) and a lot of these people are also on the front lines as far as providing service to the community. And one of the biggest problems they are encountering in the supply chain is with hoarding behavior. So .. if people hadn't stripped the shelves of staples, disinfectant, paper products, etc. like self-serving locusts several weeks back .. we'd all be able to select what we need, and have that much less reason to return?

Glad you're happy with your own decisions ...

104. Correct.

my son works in a grocery store so he does all of our shopping now as I am in a vulnerable population. but his store does not have, or is out of, many of the things i want. so I tried the local Harris Tweeter and there was not a slot available for pick up. Then I tried Amazon, first Whole Foods, couldn't find what I wanted, then Fresh. I got a delivery yesterday from them, but had to revisit the page to find an available slot.

I'm leaving the house this week only to walk the dog, but we should appreciate that many do not have the advantage I do.

31. We are severely limiting our grocery trips, but I don't see how delivery is that much better.

I see delivery people coming here (apartment) all day long, they've obviously been in multiple stores, some don't have masks, and they are coming into the apartment lobby all day long (even though it's locked).

If we make a weekly, quick trip to the store, keeping appropriate distancing and wearing a scarf and using sanitizer, I don't think it's worse than using a delivery person who's probably been in contact with dozens of people each day.

42. I am not using delivery either. I agree with you on that.

Stocked up before the order came to stay home. There were many posts here about how everyone had stocked up, but now everyone seems to be visiting the store. Yeah, there are some things I would like to have and do not, but I am not going to the store. I thought that was the whole point of staying safe. It seems everyone thinks they are the exception to the stay at home order. I saw one poster who had went on and on about how he had everything he needed earlier this month, then post a store anecdote barely a week later.

We are never going to get through this thing if we do not all follow the recommendations. I see some of the same people here calling for a national stay at home while telling grocery store anecdotes. I just find it puzzling. I truly doubt most people who post here are completely out of food. I know in better days that I would go to the store even when I had plenty to eat simply because nothing appealed to me. Now I am just trying to suck it up and eat what I have.

Maybe some just need to get out if they live in apartments. But, better to go for a walk than to the store. I wish people would stay out of the stores, the churches, Walmart, Target, and so on. I want this nightmare to end, and it will not without everyone doing their best. People are dying. This is for real.

55. We are in Seattle, and people are being great.

We really do zip in and out of the store and limit contact, and everyone in the store is doing the same. We make very few trips to the store and have a decent supply of food, but we can't go two months without replenishing some things (along with the other limitations of being in an apartment, we don't have much storage space). We haven't been to the store this week, but our strategy is to divide up the list, shop as fast as possible, and then only one of us checks out. Then we leave.

I did talk to a co-worker who's going four times a week! I couldn't believe it. (And he has a large house, no storage limitations).

i have the potential for more contact with the incessant flow of delivery people than in the actual store.

I have just become alarmed at all the stories here. I live in a house too, so have room for storage. I really do not eat a lot either, but I cannot help but feel some think they are immune. Human nature, I guess. I just want this to be over, the sooner the better.

79. It's pretty amazing. I haven't seen any - or hardly any - bad behavior.

On our few walks, people move far out of the way, and smile and wave. People wait patiently at the end of the aisles in the grocery store (or do from what I've observed on my few trips). I saw on the bus yesterday that people were sitting 20 or 40 feet apart (i was not ON the bus, I just looked inside). The buses have done an amazing thing. The drivers are partitioned off, and the fare is free, so riders just need to step on through the back door and don't have to touch anything (I guess they have to pull the cord to exit, but that's about it).

I've noticed a couple of (small) groups of youngish people (20s, 30s) who don't appear to be from the same household* walking together, but they keep their distance from us. And I notice that some people don't seem to understand that it's the norm to walk against traffic if you're in a street with no sidewalks. But this is mostly pretty minor. Delivery people who are stressed also get a little close asking for directions, but it's pretty infrequent. Overall, we're doing great.

*I'm inferring that they are not from the same household from their conversations, which sound as if they are catching up on things. But i don't know for sure that they are from different households.

163. You know (maybe?)

You know (maybe?) that's not what any of us were getting at. It was your statement: "I have not had any deliveries. I did a pickup at Walmart two weeks ago. I have soups, rice, beans, oatmeal, frozen stuff, pasta. It didn’t even cost that much to stock up. I guess I am just surprised how many people are still going shopping al the time."

You have the privilege of:

1. Having the funds to "stock" up (even if you dismiss it as not costing that much.
2. Having transportation to be able to "stock" up. Some have to walk to the store, or use a bike. Can't carry much even if you use the bus. And no, you ain't calling a damn Uber/Lyft when that money could be spent on food.
3. Not having to worry (apparently) about using your funds to "stock" up when others have to scrape from one week to the next.

Instead of recognizing that, you drop some shrugs, a "bless your heart" and then a straw man argument. I'm not saying you're well off, but at least recognize that folks (on DU) aren't out here going to the damn store for fun and/or blatantly ignoring stay at home orders, and that you may have better circumstances than many of those you are chiding.

So even though people are staying home, it might sound like everyone is shopping all the time.

I think you can stay very safe, and still get groceries every week or two. Many fresh vegetables don't last that long, and can't be frozen. And there are limits on popular dry goods to prevent people from hoarding.

I'd have enough to buy a nice comfortable house with plenty of storage and freezer space, a Costco membership to buy food in bulk, and a nice vehicle to transport it home. And then I could stay home for a month or 2 and gloat at the less fortunate for not being as clever as me while being completely oblivious to their personal situations and environment.

Regular fridge and freezer. I do have a nice car, but i had dogs in the car coming home from the store, the groceries did not take up that much room. Maybe I just do not eat as much as some on here. I do not drink soda, only coffee, water, tea, juice, and of course wine.

I commented simply because so many here ‘gloated” as you put it about having stocked up, only to post about going to the store a week later. This place is really funny sometimes.

Have a great night! Stay home and stay safe! Maintain your social distance!

It is not good enough for them to hold a monopoly on the truth, they also need to berate you for what you believe. Typical bullies.

I got some sideways glances and some whispering and pointing when I went into the grocery store wearing a mask last week. Nobody had the nerve to do it to my face, and it was a good thing, I was not in the mood to take any shit. Even though I am an old white haired man I am still tough enough to deal with the type. I am also of that magic age, that if they lay their finger on me, that simple battery becomes a felony. So messing with me might not only get them an ass whoopin, but also a spell in the jail

Walked up wearing gloves and n95 mask. 60ish couple in front of me. I maintained a 10 foot interval behind them. They both turned, stared at me and commented out loud that I was sure dressed for the occasion, of course they were wearing zero protection and within 3 feet of the guy behind the little table. Guy actually asked “what are you afraid of?” - I, for me, tactfully replied “people like you” - rather than “fucking morons like you.”

Just start coughing. I guarantee he will walk away.

They also disobey the social distancing.

102. Darn, i had a similar experience yesterday around noon @Costco near me & can empathize.

A RW prick and his wife & 2 young girls, none of them mask-wearing, were in line ahead of me. He complained Costco wouldn't let more than 2 people in per card so he made insinuations on how this was an overblown hoax, etc. When the lady ahead of him countered him he insulted her. At that point i had it with the nut and told him people are dying, and if he can't bring himself to comply with the store's rules to leave the rest of us alone. He then proceeded to direct his insults at me, and i returned the favor with factual take-downs, and called him a G-darn prick. Serves him right.

London wasn't "London". Just ask Boris Johnson and any other unfortunate denier from weeks past. The virus doesn't care who you are or where you live, just as long as it gets established and passed along.

119. It's not about protecting yourself.

The mask can't do that.

It's about protecting others from you, in case you are shedding virus and don't know it yet.

"This mask protects others, Ignoramus. But, like your leader, I guess you don't really care about other other people either."

126. I had a guy, a woman and her daughter laugh at my daughter and I.

My daughter said, "mom, look they're laughing" I didn't say anything, we got in line (at Costco, early) and they were looking back at us, the guy started laughing, I turned to my daughter and said loudly, "I value my life and your life, so I will protect us from people like them".

Boy, did they shut up! Then more and more people came with masks on!

133. I talked to one person wearing a mask last time I had to go shopping

Told him his nose needed to be covered as well.

Then I faked having lost my voice when going through the checkout because I got the kid who has to have a full-blown conversation over every item of yours he scans keeping people out in public longer. I felt that was not just a way for me not to have to deal with him but socially responsible as well.

138. An acquaintance in AZ had something like this happen the other day...

...he was in a large liquor/wine store with his wife, they were masked and gloved and some hick said he was going to come over and breathe on them. As the jerk approached his wife, he saw red and knocked the guy on his ass. Store security came out, also masked and gloved, said they saw the whole thing and tossed the guy out of the store.

My snowbird friends from New York State (think: Niagara Falls) spend the winters in South Carolina.

Recently, they have found SC people spitting on their car, such that they had to remove the front license plate and park with the back of the car against the garage door.

160. Are you in Ohio too?

A Trump supporter at my workplace approached me and coughed right in my face a couple weeks ago. Then he laughed and told me “It’s just a joke, dude. Don’t believe the fake news!”

That job became more unbearable after I finally revealed to a coworker that I was a liberal. It then spread throughout the factory, like many rumors at that place.

170. Wow. That sounds like a nightmare. How do you keep your sanity?

I feel lucky to live in CA, although I live in a little red pocket of the state. A lot of my neighbors are Republicans and it absolutely sucks to be surrounded by those idiots. But at least I don't have to spend time with them. Almost all my coworkers have been liberals, which made work a lot more pleasant. I think I would lose my mind if I had to spend all day working with MAGAts. I'm sorry you're going through that hell.

Ohio has 5,148 confirmed Covid-19 cases and 193 deaths. That's not fake news. https://ncov2019.live/

Please take lots of zinc and Vitamin D to help fight off viruses you might be exposed to by those idiots. And Lysol the fuck out of everything they touch around you.

...and I'll never understand why people in the military support this chickenshit impostor who has ZERO respect for the military order or the people in it. He uses them as props an they buy in?? Unbelievable.
