KS republican who wanted to shoot immigrants from helicopters gets leadership role

TOPEKA — The Legislative Coordinating Council (LCC), made up of the Kansas House and Senate Leadership, recently gave approval for the 2012 interim committees, including the Special Committee on Transportation. Speaker of the House Mike O’Neal R-Hutchinson, named Rep. Virgil Peck, R-Tyro, as the vice chair of Special Transportation Committee.

“Rep. Peck understands the importance of maintaining our Kansas transportation system, which is why it was not a difficult decision to appointment him as the vice chair of this critical interim committee,” said O’Neal, chair of LCC.

For the past two years, Peck has served as chair of the Transportation and Public Safety Budget Committee which meets during the regular session. The joint interim committees alternate the chairs every other year, and this is the year for a senator to serve as chair of the interim transportation committee.

“The Kansas Legislature only meets 90 days out of the year and adjourns the end of each May. Taking a day or two during the remaining seven months to review Kansas transportation helps to ensure we provide for the transportation infrastructure needs of our residents and businesses,” said Peck.

“I am honored to serve as vice chair of this important committee as we continue to focus on moving Kansas forward.”
