Bob Kerrey: "Santorum, that’s Latin for asshole"

Over at Balloon Juice is quite an entertaining post with some early Santorum.

Rick Santorum had only been in the senate for a few weeks when Bob Kerrey, then Senator from Nebraska, pegged him. “Santorum, that’s Latin for asshole.” It was probably the funniest line the grim Kerrey ever uttered and it was on the mark, too...

It's not really good Latin, though. But there's some holiness in there, I guess, and holes have meaning. So, asshole is as good a translation as any, I suppose.

One source on Italian names gives that origin for "Santorum" and some similar names:

From the medieval first name Santoro, derived from the Latin word Sanctus = Saint, the genitive plural form is "Sanctorum", used also to indicate the All Saints feast. Possibly connected to someone acting as a saint, or who has connection with religious things (a sacristan) (from http://www.italyworldclub.com/genealogy/surnames/s.htm)

It seems plausible to me that, over the centuries, "sanctorum" (meaning "of the saints&quot would lose one of the consonants in that n-c-t clump.

Also this:

The first or given name Richard derives from German, French, and English "ric" (ruler, leader, king) and "hard" (strong, brave, court), therefore it means "powerful leader" . . . .

(from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard)

So "Richard Santorum" is "the powerful leader of the saints" -- which should be a frightening prospect for Americans who still believe in religious liberty.
