The label of "right wing" is bogus for the protest at Encinitas, California. It is one of the more liberal cities in America, look it up. The people who live there, had enough and they protested specifically, intelligently and loudly. Yeah there were some Trump trolls, they were very few and far between. You can recognize Trumpers by their expensive, professionally printed signs.

(924 posts)These people were very much not Trump and Fox trolls. You can over simplify this but there were two live feeds and extensive coverage here in San Diego. You can say they are idiots, but these are citizens who were protesting the closures in their community.
The protest was prompted by a closure of a wide walking trail next to a rail line on Wednesday 4/15 . It is a pedestrian thoroughfare between Encinitas and Cardiff. It was a breaking point for many people who just wanted to take a walk on a wide trail or beach.
This is not all Trumpers, here is another link no editing on this one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=5&v=Hal6FXJifBY&feature=emb_logo

Bad Thoughts
(2,609 posts)He identifies himself as Jan Schnitzer, who appears to be a resident of Encinitas who works at UC San Diego. He's a registered Republican.
He's also full of bullshit. The notion that we will get herd immunity is not clear, and the notion that the mortality rate will decline to the point of the common flu is wishful thinking.
ETA: He is an adjunct faculty at an Institute supported by UCSD. His bio claims that he is a professor in another department, but I can find no record supporting that fact.

(15,805 posts)I have two cousins in the trucking biz who live in rural areas around there and they are 100% rabid Trump Republicans. It wouldn't surprise me if they were at the protests with pro-trump banners on their trucks, and themselves all decked out in their Trumpian bling finery.

(924 posts)You might be surprised to know that San Diego county is about the same size geographically and in population as the state of Connecticut. Saying people near there is very subjective as El Cajon and Lakeside are in the same county but are very different in every conceivable way.

(13,571 posts)Also Tom Metzger (Aryan Brotherhood) headquarters we're about 40 minutes away. They're dying off, but there's still a nasty streak of racist anti-government "suburban wanna-be cowboy" types in the area.
Hippy punching was a sport with a lot of those residents back in the early 80's. Along with abusing the migrant farmworkers they hired for their orchards and small ranches.

Saying people near there is very subjective as El Cajon, Fallbrook and Lakeside are in the same county but are very different in every conceivable way. If you were able to drive 40 minutes away (no traffic) from any major American city, you can find all sorts of people.
haele
(13,571 posts)45 minutes drive is less than the average morning commute.
Thing is, while Encinitas itself is marginally blue, there's still a lot of little red pockets in the area between I-5 and the 15, and traffic isn't that difficult to get down to Pacific Highway.
If it wasn't for fair redistricting, that area would probably still be under Issa.
I wasn't saying all the fine folks in Encinitas are right wing idiots, but that there are a significantly larger number of ex-burb white nationalist sympathizers than normally would be expected still living in the area dreaming of past GOP glory.

(15,805 posts)You made at lot of unsubstantiated assertions. You concluded that protesters were "Intelligent" because they were complaining about not being allowed to enjoy their favorite outdoor activities and spread the virus vs complying with stay home orders and not infecting it to others.
That illogical thinking lands you squarely in the camp of these Darwin Award candidates, and not a rational person. Save your money, if not your life, you definitely don't need a "professionally" printed sign for identification.

Most of the business owners I know will still sit at home where it's safe, while their employees have to deal with the virus.

(32,087 posts)next door to Encinitas. We both went to high school in La Jolla in the 60's. There was always a mix of hippies and right wingers in the area back then, and I don't think it has changed much over the years. Tremendous growth since 1965 when we moved to the area, but still a range of political opinions.

(305,585 posts)graduated from La Jolla High in 1985 and '86. They are Dems.. but their father, who still lives in La Jolla, is sadly a magat.
My 50th high school reunion (Class of '69) was last fall, but I didn't go. Just couldn't bring myself to fly cross country from NC to CA at the time. Only went to school at La Jolla High for 2 years as I grew up in New Jersey and moved to CA in 1965.
It has changed so much. Do your son and daughter still live in the area?
Cha
(305,585 posts)High for 2 years.
My son has lived on Kauai since 1985 since he graduated. . went for surfing. My daughter lives in Portland Oregon. She met her husband at the University of Oregon, he's from Australia.. and they settled in Portland after graduation.
It has changed so much.. I used to work at a Natural Food store close to Windansea Beach for 5 years from '74 to '79.
Good times!

(8,419 posts)A district that has elected one Dem, and that was in 2000, this century!
Yes you said liberal cities, but damn, SoCal has this major transportation network of freeways, the entire district could access Encinitas within a 30 minute drive.
The proof is in who they elect to congress, and calling a district in CA that elects Repukes a liberal district? All of fucking Orange County is more liberal than that district. California has 51 members of the House, 45 are Democrats! Math is simple, that means six are not Democrats, but they are all Republicans, and one is from the District that includes Encinitas.
Finally,
