The Senate Races: Where they stand today. Find your state and tell me what I got wrong.

As most here know, there are 33 contested Senate seats. Democrats have 21 seats up, Independents have 2 and Republicans have 10.

I've been researching the state of those races and where they stand today. The news is pretty encouraging for us.

I've found it's too much work to do this all at once so here are the first 11 of the Senate races and the latest info I could find on them.


Arizona Kyl retiring. Rep. Jeff Flake (R) and Richard Carmona (D). Surprisingly close race. according to PPPs latest polling,
the race is tied.

Connecticut LIArman retiring. Linda McMahon (R) and Rep. Chris Murphy (D). Ugh. Also surprising close. Not in a good way.
Latest Quinnipiac Poll (8/28) has McMahon up 3 points

California Feinstein defending. Elizabeth Empken (R) challenging. No contest. Feinstein leads by double digits.

Delaware Thomas Carper (D) defending. It's Delaware. I can't even find any polling and I don't think there's a repub winner
from the primary yet. Why am I still writing about this race. In the bag for dems.

Florida Bill Nelson (D) defending, Rep. Connie Mack (R) challenging. Nelson leads Mack in the latest PPP polling by
7. He's not very popular. Fortunately, Mack is massively unpopular.

Hawaii Daniel Akaka (D) retiring. Contesting: Linda Lingle (R) and Mazie Hirono (D). For a while it looked like a
potential republican pick-up. Now it doesn't according to several articles I read. No recent polling that I
could find so I'm not sure how that conclusion was reached.

Indiana Lugar (R) retiring. Contesting: Rep. Joe Donnelly (D) and Richard Mourdock (nominally R, actually TP). Now leans
Republican instead of safely repub. Donnelly making inroads.

Maine Olympia Snowe (R) retiring. Angus King (I) owns this one. Summers (R) and Dill (D) don't stand a chance. the only
question is who will he caucus with? King does support the ACA so that may be a clue. Or not.

Maryland Ben Cardin (D) defending. Somebody-or-other Bongino (R) contesting. It's a safe seat. no recent polling.

Massachusetts Scott Brown (R) defending. Elizabeth Warren (D) contesting. All polling shows a disturbingly close race.

Michigan Debbie Stabenow (D) defending, Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R) contesting. Stabenow leads by 6 in latest RCP
compilation. There is some tightening in the race perhaps due to exceptionally nasty advertising by
Hoekstra, but with President Obama pulling away from Romney, she should hold it.

“A year ago, I thought the Republicans were certainly more likely than not to net four seats and win control,” said Stuart Rothenberg, editor of the nonpartisan Rothenberg Political Report. “It increasingly looks like they have to run the table here.”

1. "Connie Mack the California Resident"

I live in his very red district. No, Nelson is not liked here, but they say Mack doesn't live in Florida, but in California. That is the theme of the ads they are running in Florida too. Oh, he missed voting on such and such a bill? Oh, he must have been in CALIFORNIA!

4. Interesting. I certainly noted in my research that

Mack is incredibly unpopular. I forget the exact figures but it's something like 37% approval.

2. Massachusetts is definitely close

Elizabeth Warren is retooling her campaign ads to come across as warmer and more approachable. Unfortunately, Scott Brown is very good at playing a 'regular guy' in his ads. I'm hoping and praying that Warren can pull it off and win this race, but it's going to be a close one for sure.

3. Sherrod Brown is leading in Ohio by 3.7% at RCP. Saw a poll yesterday that showed Brown ahead by 6%

but his lead has been declining so it figures to get really close.

5. That sucks. We really need him.
